These are the same two guys that tried to drive a 1951 Chevy flatbed truck from Cuba to the US, but was intercepted by the Coast Guard. Their truck was sunk by the Coast Guard because it wasn't deemed seaworthy enough for a tow and they couldn't leave it adrift since it would pose a hazard to navigation.

I think some attempt should be made to bring this car aboard and send it to a museum as a symbol of the struggle of people to flee communism.

Post by: Chairboy on February 04, 2004, 02:57:27 PM: What they're doing is smart too, if what I've heard is correct. It's my understanding that many of the feet dry refugees are caught because they're on feet and it's easy to find them along the shore.

Even though Cuban have an exemption if they hit dry land, I imagine that they feel it is in their interest to avoid being apprehended in the first place, so with a working car, they could potentially hit land, convert, then be miles away by the time the first police car responded to some observant citizen's call.

This technique would probably be of most use to Haitian refugees (who receive no special treatment, feet wet OR dry).

This is the correct picture for the article qouted... The previous picture happened recently... The truck was sunk and I think a local cuban community called "La democracia" is trying to get the truck/boat up... but have been unable to locate it.

They did out fit that truck with a propeller and a rudder, controlled from the drivers seat.

The cubans on the truck/boat have been taken back to cuba...

Why does cuba need to spend any money on a navy to stop folks from leaving, when they'll just be caught by our coast guard 80 miles from cuba, then brought back?

I was referring to the "ships" they are stealing from the Cuban Navy. ;)
