I have a few questions,

What is the Serial ATA interface and do I need any special hardware etc to take advantage of it.  It seems there is a special power chord, but is that it.  Will I be able to use it in any pc?

Yup...A Motherboard that has SATA connectors and the cables..
You can get a convertor so your non sata drives work with it but not much point..
ASUS latest have SATA

Ya SATA is a special plug for both inter face and power! Some drives IE like mine a WD raptor 36G has both form of power and my MOBO supports SATA on board,   but you still need the data cable and either a MOBO that supports it, the adaptors for the IDE cables or a SATA PCI card!
