Title: xp problem
Post by: SNO on February 05, 2004, 07:00:59 PM
Here are 3 interesting problems that I hope someone can answer.

I have p4 2.8c, 1 gig of 3200 ram running WinXP

1) My device manager no longer shows anything in the screen, the only solutions I have found are plug and play needs enabled and it is enabled on my machine.

2) My network connections shows nothing in the screen even though all network and internet works. I have found basically nothing on this problem.

3) On windows update page I can get the updates to show but when going to the actual download I get the error screen with the generic error message 0X800A138f which none of the suggestions that I can find fix the not being able to download the updates.

I have all the Norton virus updates and shows no virus, ran the virus removal tool for that new magoon or whatever virus and it is not present.

Thnx for any help.

When did this start happening?  Has it always done this, or has this started happening recently?

My first reaction to this would be that Internet Explorer has been corrupted somehow.   That could be caused by a virus/worm, or perhaps by a failed install of an update for IE.

As for the Windows Update error, try looking at:

I first noticed the device manger problem about 2 weeks ago, the network connections problem just 1 week ago along with the update problem. I have not installed any new software or hardware in last month. Bloom I tried that thread, didn't hlp :(
I have ran norton antivirus with up to date definitions and also the mygoon removal tool thinking that could possibly be it. Ran Ad-aware 6.0 , regcheck, scandisk, defragged, can't restore cuz ran mygoon removal tool and you disable restore to run properly which in turn deletes your restore poiints.. hmmmmm   anyway to recover those ???? Can I reinstall the IE update ? I have it on disk as you recommend in your install write-up?

Why don't we take a look at the event viewer to see if we can figure out what's happening?

Go to Start -> Control Panel -> Administrative Tools -> Event Viewer.  Now look under the Application and System tabs for anything "interesting."  Anything indicated as an error that has just started happening within the past 2 weeks may be useful.

It is possible to do a repair install of IE6, but it will write over all of your IE critical updates.  If you do that, you will have to reinstall them all.

You probably disabled the service...  I can't tell you how many people take blackviper's advice too far...

No Items Appear in the Device Manager List When You Open It
View products that this article applies to.
This article was previously published under Q311504
SYMPTOMS

When you open Device Manager, no devices appear in the list. Instead, a blank window appears.

CAUSE
This behavior occurs if the Plug and Play service is turned off (disabled).

RESOLUTION
To resolve this behavior, set the startup type for Plug and Play to Automatic. To do so, follow these steps:

Click Start, click Run, type services.msc, and then click OK.
Double-click Plug and Play.

If you receive a Configuration Manager message, click OK.
In the Startup Type list, click Automatic, and then click OK.
Close Services.
Restart the computer.

STATUS
This behavior is by design.
MORE INFORMATION
Plug and Play is a core operating system service, and therefore, it is best to not disable it. It runs in normal mode and in safe mode.

Bloom, chked and a few errors but they are common all the way down the list. Ya I kinda thought that if I could run the update over I would have to reinstall all the critical updates, that is why I am hesitant to do that right yet. Dingbat I found that bulliten also but my plug and play was and is enabled. Anymore ideas?????? thnx for hlp so far

Provide a list of all your services that are running, you can get it by exporting from system information.

Try to restart your Plug and play service, do you get an error?

Set everything to manual temporarily and reboot, see if you can launch Windows update successfully.

If not post the erros that are in both system and application sections in the event log.

One last thing:

Post the contents of this file:

C:\Windows\Windows Update.log

You should not disable the Alerter service.  Set it back to manual.

You might also want to set the WebClient service back to manual as well.

just reformat and reinstall much easier.

Turned alerter and Web-Client back on.
Haven't had the time to other stuff yet Dingbat

Reformatting is an option, but was hoping to find something dumb and easy to fix these problems. And it has of yet to burden normal machine usage

Post by: SNO on February 14, 2004, 08:47:32 AM
I set everything to manual and rebooted, checked the logs and no errors except for my hpna network card. I cannot find a windows update log file in the windows folder. I can access the win updates, problem is when you click to download the update is when I get the error. I have went to the windows download page where I can manually download the critical updates, I know this doesn't solve the problem by no means but at least comp is as safe as can be.
Thnx for the help

Two suggestions to perform seperately: reapply the service pack; and set all your services to Automatic and reboot. The latter will give you errors but if you look in Event Viewer, you'll be able to see which services give faults.

You've tried this (http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=kb;en-us;311504&Product=winxp) haven't you?

I've had a simular problem with windows update for the last few months.

so I stumbled on a fix that works for me (and no, I have no idea why it works).

when you run the unpdate page it shows you driver updates, xp updates, and critical updates (with the critical updates automaticly selected for download).  when I'd select 'download and install' it would run and give me the error.  so anyway one day I was just staring at it all pissed off and bored and cancelled the selection of the critical update (leaving noe selected) then rechose it and ran the download.  everything worked fine.

so far I've had the error on the last 4 critical updates and this has fixed every one.

I don't understand it, it just works for me.

qts, I think re-applying the service pack is the next step, and yes that was the first thing I tried. Capt, will try you're suggestion the next set of critical updates that come out.
