pretty simple really, get a drive that does both formats.  Dvd-R is more compatible with standalone players, but is limited to slow burn speeds 2X.  Dvd+R is up to 8X however the media is more expensive.  If you get a drive with both formats you can get in on alot of sales for media, some weeks its -R on sale other its +R.

Staples has a Cendyne 4X +R drive on sale for $59.90 if you can find it instore, it is sold out online.  Not a bad drive it is actually an NEC drive that can be flashed to make it +/- R.  If you want a good dual format drive look at the Pioneer A06 and A07 or Plextor PX-708A, great drives.

+R holds about 4.5 GB on a disk.  -R holds about 4.7 GB on a disk.  -R is typically better supported for home DVD players.  +R offers higher write speeds.  It also supports lossless linking, making it somewhat better suited for frequent backup use.

It's also worth noting that 8.5 GB/disk recordable DVD drives and disks are due for release in March/April this year...  Current drives will not support these.

Data only, if your recording video it wont matter as a both can hold only 4.37GB
