Man are they annoying. IE is so annoying to use, if i am typing in the address bar, i get interrupted often by pop-up ads. It is almost unusable. I like Netscape 7.1 because it has a pop-up blocker, but so many sights are designed for IE (it's a microsoft world). I have cleaned cache, cookies, have run ad-aware and a spybot and they are still there.
Is it in my computer? (cookies, spyware, etc.?) or is it in conjunction with the website? (ie.. go to this website, you get this pop-up)
And for the record these are normal, family websites I am talking about.

Tap - do you have a firewall? You should in this day and age... if you get a good one like Zone Alarm Pro from Zone Labs, it will have a built in popup ad zapper. I have Zone Alarm Pro, and I never get a single pop ad these days.
-
wow, cool. I have the free zone alarm, will look into it
thanks

Rgr that, Tap. I just had a look at the website, and I am led to believe that you need the PRO version to suppress popups.

Fer popups
http://toolbar.google.com/
-
FWIW, XP service pack 2 updates Internet Explorer with a popup blocker...
-
The Google toolbar popup blocker is super, and it's free.

Yahoo also has a toolbar popup blocker. Haven't had a single one since I installed it.
-
We use Google's popup blocker for all our PC here at work.
Works very well.

Make sure you run Ad-Aware every month to get rid of any "behind-the-scenes" installed popups and spyware crap.

Got a question....if you have a web page that has a link that is designed to initiate a small pop up in a new window does pop up blocker permit this.
-
Depends on how they do it. Most popup blockers just block javascript initiated popups, but on occasion a user-clicked popup won't work. To get around this, Google toolbar notifies you when it blocks a popup. With that, you can hit a key and click the link again, then it'll bypass the popup blocking.
-
thanks chair. my website uses HTML to create a new window and i was allways curious
-
Then again, you could get Firebird from http://www.mozilla.org and have the best of both worlds. Auto pop-up blocker, user-clicked pop-ups work perfectly, loads blindingly fast (both the prog and pages), no "behind the scenes" crap to worry about, and it's free. Though it is a little buggy ATM since it's in BETA. Last time I checked it was v0.7, the same version I'm using now. Works better than Netcrap, and light years better than IE.

Near the bottom right is a link that says "Check for updates now".
If you're not using it, you should be.

I have installed the google toolbar, it has blocked 1 pop-up. I am getting other pop-ups all the time. I am going to try the yahoo one. I have windows xp fully updated and see no pop-up blocker in IE.
I see a ton of options at download.com, but they all cost money.
any more options?

The popup blocker in IE will not be available till Service pack 2 comes out...
-
are these internet explorer popups or are they windows message like popups?
I haven't seen a single popup -- not one-- since I installed google toolbar which makes me think you are getting windows messages and not popups..

By chance it's not a box that you have to click OK to get ride of is it?
Have you disabled the messenger service?
It really sounds like you have spyware on your PC because, my google popblocker has blocked well over 700 popups in 2 months.

How about this one: whenever I start IE in my brother's computer, it has some kind of link page as a homepage. Nothing obscene or anything, but everytime I change the homepage in options, and restart, this same page is back as the homepage. Any ideas?
Also, IE has a nasty tendency to lock up and seems to be running slower. When I open the favourites menu and click the link for the Aces High BB, not only does it go to this BBS, but it opens another window with the main HTC site in it (including the animationed intro). Bizarre.
Running XP Pro, fully patched up and PC-cillin firewall/antivirus software.
-
Run the Adaware. Possibly Spybot too. Each picks up things that the other doesn't.
It's spyware that keeps setting the homepage.

Definitely spyware...
Goto MSCONIFG --> Startup
You'll probably find the offending application there...
Ad-aware or spybot will help you get rid of it.

Thanks.

I've noticed a number of different sites that are running some sort of applet, MSNBC, CBS and others. The page appears to just lock up for a minute or more. Can't close it, can't do anything with it all, but eventually whatever it is loads and then the page behaves. It's irritating.

Yeah... there's a nasty one called NetPal or something like that... Every few weeks or so, I'm forced to clean my children's machines of all the stupid stuff they allow to be installed.

Really? What operating system are they running? If they're running Windows 98 or Millenium, that makes sense, but if they are running XP or Windows 2000, you can give them a non-administrator account so they can't install programs. It's a good way to keep the system intact, they don't have access to break stuff.

Its probably java kicking in, you might try going to java.sun.com and updating if you haven't in a while...
I noticed a slowdown and realized that I hadn't installed JVM at all after a re-install.

Chairboy. Turn your own account into a non-adminstration account.
Now try to do anything.
Come back in 5 minutes and tell us how much it sucks.

It's 98. It's okay though... if it gets too broken, I just wipe the drive. :)

Yeah.. it does suck, but the alternative is that I get to spend the time and headache fixining it. I've considered going to another OS simply for that purpose. When they start administering their own problems, they can have access to do so.
