Title: Former Blue Angel F/A-18A for sale
Post by: CMC Airboss on February 08, 2004, 11:21:35 PM
No doubt, this F/A-18A Hornet is a great deal at 850,000.  Formerly served with the US Navy Blue Angels as both #1 and #5.  It is now in civilian hands after what appears to be a monumental mistake by the military and the FAA.

No bids so far.

Oh man, what a plane to have!  Thats alot of hours for a plane to have isnt it (3800)?  The plane is extremely close to the ground in one of the pictures, did it belly in?

The shot of #6 was taken during its takeoff routine where the pilot flies down the runway in ground effect then pulls a high-G climb.  They do that for nearly every show.

What in god's name happened to this thing to warrant this sort of depreciation? It's a pretty plane, no doubt, but would be nice to know what's going on inside it.

Thought it was illegal for Civis to own serving military aircraft in the states?

No, its a second amendment thing....

I think as long as it is unarmed, you can get around it.   Military aircraft are generally not surplused when they are first line, they are parted out or rebuilt into more modern variants.

This one was mistakenly sold.  Snafu is a term with a military origin.

These aircraft were practically de-milled for the Blue Angels mission.  The gun and ammo drum were removed to accomodate the oil tank for the smoke system.  It is likely that other combat systems are removed to lighten the airplane.  ECM LRU's, for instance.

If that thing would have any of the usual electronics onboard, it'd cost alot more than that.. even if it'd be "old" stuff.

Will deliver for fuel cost.

This thing burns 3000 lbs of fuel per engine per hour.
Make a great lawn ornament though :)

This aircraft was never demilled, not cut ever and its complete with extras.

Why am I suspicious of this claim?

On the other hand, that UH-1 they're selling looks inviting.

I dont think it's legal for a civ to own a plane that wasnt de-milled.  Well I think you can own it but you cant fly it.  A friend of mine told me a story about a guy who baught some military buildings in auction.  Inside the buildings were nuke warheads that somhow got misplaced.  Turns out he by law he owns the nukes but has to have them stored by the military.  Like I said not sure if it was true he said he saw it on real tv or somthing.

The auction ended early with a buy-it-now bid of $1,075,000.00.   The really funny thing is that the bidder has three feedbacks and two of them are negative for being a fraud.  Some people will never learn.  We should see it back for auction soon.
