Install the current version of DirectX.

Run DXDIAG (Start->Run->DXDIAG), select the "Sound" tab and run the diagnostics, if you still get the error when starting Aces High.

I'm back in the game, but no sounds, got ati 9600 w/ soundmax. I no longer see anything soundmax related on cp. would xp overwrite soundcard files?

Did you run DXDIAG and check to see if any errors show up on the Sound tab?

Sounds like the drivers may not be loaded for the sound card.  Remember, Windows has default sound drivers that allow Windows sounds to work, but if you do not load the specific sound card drivers for the sound card, then DirectX will not be able to sue the sound card.

Thanks gents for the info. Got it squared away. Looks like when I installed xp, it overwrote the drivers and config. The biggest problem was finding the device(integrated sound) and config. Then downloaded correct drivers. All set now. Oz
