After reading quite a bit about the P38 I decided to give it a try this tour as the ride I would use the most in the MA (non-squad nights of course).
I am throughly enjoying the plane, but sometimes when I'm pulling for the shot the nose of the plane seems to bounce around a bit. I haven't spent a lot of time flying without combat trim so I can't say if that would solve my problem or not, or if it is something else about the way I am flying it.
Has anyone else experienced this with the P38? I can't say I've ever had this happen with F4U or F6F before, but I'm not very experienced.

Nose mounted guns are more sensitive in pitch than wing mounted guns. You'll need to adjust your stick settings to make it a bit smoother (manual trim helps too but isn't mandatory)

Does the nose bounce around just when you're flying?

Try this stick scale.
Just right click on the link and select "Save Target or Save As" and then point the save window to your Aces High Settings folder and save the stick scale into there. You might want to rename your old stick.cfg to stick.bak first.

And don't use combat trim in the P-38.

llasersailor184, I notice the problem most when I am pulling for a shot and not as much (or at all) when I am just flying around. Most likely because I'm yanking the stick around more quickly to adjust for enemy maneuvering.
Thanks Ack-Ack! I'll try that stick scaling when I get home from work tonight, and I'll spend some more time without combat trim as well and see if those clear up my nose bounce issues.

i found nose mounted guns MUCH MORE harder to hit the target with.
can someone think of a reason? seems kinda wierd to me

I have the same problem. It usually happens when I either start to get too slow or I push the AoA too much and start to go into a high-speed stall. The P-38 is the only plane that I experience the nose-wobble with.
I quit flying the P-38 because, quite frankly, I suck in it.

Just wanted to close things out by saying I tried that stick.cfg from Ack-Ack and my problem almost completly went away. At this point I just need some more experience! Thanks for all the help.

wing guns and nose guns are 2 kind of gun plantforms and takes time to get used to the gunplantform
wing guns spew bullets everwere and get alot of hits across the plane and are more easy to use
nose guns fire right online right infront of your view and they are harder to hit with but they can cause much more hurt on a single part of a plane then wing guns can do
your going to have to get the nose of your aircraft right on your target
when it comes to the P38 firepower it may not look great with only 4 50's and 1 20mm but since there nose guns if the pliot can get a good shot the target well be riped to shreds due to the nose guns hiting allaround the same spot

...I watched you pull an amazing spiral evasive in a P38 right to the deck a couple of days ago. How'd you do it? I've tried that on another occasion and compressed or had my butt retro-fitted with a new bung courtesy of the guy chasing me.
I'm curious to know what you did to avoid compression/ventilation.

I don't remember the day I did that, but usually whenever I go into a spiral dive I chop the throttle, pop the dive brake, as much flaps if any (depending on speed) and I will also cross control some using the rudder.
Lots going on but it usually causes the bad guy to over shoot, or he breaks off in frustration, or I die. hehehe
