Title: New Game Announcement - World at War
Post by: Curval on February 19, 2004, 12:05:56 PM
Just got this by e-mail:

Matrix Games and 2 by 3 Games Announce Gary Grigsby’s World At War!

Award-Winning Team Takes On World War II Grand Strategy

Woodbridge, NJ, February 18th, 2004 - Matrix Games and 2 by 3 Games (http://www.2by3games.com) are pleased to announce the development of an exciting new World War II grand strategy title, Gary Grigsby’s World At War, to be released later this year by Matrix Games.

Designed by the legendary Gary Grigsby, who has over twenty-five published wargames under his belt, including Steel Panthers and several more in the Computer Gaming World Hall of Fame, this title is already creating excitement among wargamers world-wide.  Developed by the acclaimed 2 by 3 Games team that brought the award-winning Uncommon Valor to wargamers in 2003, Gary Grigsby’s World At War is World War II grand strategy done right.

David Heath, Director of Operations at Matrix Games, said, "Everyone knows how World War II turned out, but most wargames don’t allow you to truly explore it as a global conflict.  Gary Grigsby’s World at War removes those limits and gives wargamers an intelligent, historical system that pulls no punches.”

With Gary Grigsby’s World at War, the historical course of World War II may change depending on your choices. The Western Allies may be conquered by Germany, or Japan may defeat China. With you at the controls, leading the fates of nations and alliances, anything is possible in this new strategic offering.

Lead your armies to victory by honing their abilities in research and development, creating a more powerful force than any other on the planet.  Marshal your economic strength to out-produce your enemies.  Build with foresight, however; the bigger and more expensive units take longer to build and are invested in over time rather than being an instant purchase. Players have to plan several game turns in advance, tailoring far-reaching strategies to fit the current strategic situation.

Joel Billings of 2 by 3 Games added, “We’ve wanted to do a full World War II game for some time.  We’ve designed Gary Grigsby’s World at War to provide our trademark historical depth and accuracy as well as the fun and playability that comes with the grand strategy scale.”

Take command in this dynamic turn-based game and test strategies that long-past generals and world leaders could only dream of: make it happen in Gary Grigsby’s World at War.  The entire saga of World War II is yours to re-enact or to re-make in your own vision.

Game Features:

Four full-length scenarios (Spring ’40, Summer ’41, Spring ’42, Summer ’43) lasting to the end of the war
Over 350 areas on a sprawling world map
Five playable forces (Germany, Japan, the Soviet Union, the Western Allies, and China) and 38 different countries
Command fifteen different combat units in the air, on the land, and at sea, as well as infrastructure and supply units
Each unit has up to 14 attributes, most of which can be improved through research and development
Rules that cover strategic movement, forts, cold weather zones, airborne attack, amphibious invasions, partisans, militia, and many other features
Fog of War rules that hide enemy units and production
Supply rules that can be set to provide a common pool for all units to draw from, or the creation of field units that must accompany the armies
PBEM playability for two to five players
Challenging AI that offers a unique gaming experience
Ability to automate either or both the Production and Research functions
An in-depth tutorial that smoothly integrates the player with the game

Very cool.  The same maker of Uncommon Valor right?

I still have that on my system but I just couldn't get myself into the PTO that much.  Maybe with the ETO and Mediterranean I can!

Exactly what I was thinking.

Speaking of which, is there an online version of Axis and Allies?  That'd be a blast to play over the internet.

China gets it's own country but the British (Commonwealth) and the US don't.

Much, much  too "strategic" for my taste.

Grigsby's classic War in Russia is free for download instead.

Well it's about time someone tried to make a world conflict game.It sounds like it might be like Avalon Hill's board game"Third Reich" in scope or more...Been waiting for something like this as most PC games are too generic or tactical.I was hoping TOAW would become a grand campaign someday.Hope it has multiplayer that allows several players.

No, pauseable continuous time, like Europa Universalis.

Division sized grand strategy game covering the entire world. Including production, research, diplomacy etc.

Yes there is, but it had issues, and Hasbro has removed it from its list due to it being an embarrassment to the company..

Sorry that just doesn't sound impressive..

3 different infantry, 3 different "tanks", 3 different "artilery", 3 different aircraft, and 3 different ships......... sorry this is just another POS game with no depth....

I'll pass..
