Title: Anyone know how to get the mini-stick on a USB CH Pro Throttle to work for views?
Post by: Ack-Ack on February 21, 2004, 02:54:36 PM
I finally decided to leave the Stone Age and dump my old faithful CH analog gear for all new CH USB gear.

I managed to plod my way through Control Manager (IMO, Speedkeys is much more user friendly) and figured out how to program my throttle and stick.  The only thing I was not able to do was get the mini-stick to work for my views.  Is there a way to get it it to work for views?

Its too ungainly for views imho, instead I have it mapped to the mouse so I can quickly get the mouse pointer off the screen while keeping my hands on my sticks.

Delirium, how did you program the mini-stick to views?  And was it only pan views?

I used it for the look up and look straight up views, I've fortunately forgotten how I did it. Like I said, its ungainly... CH would of been better off putting something usable in its place like another 4/8 way hat.

That's one thing I do miss about my analog Pro Throttle, was the 8 way on it and the modification I did to it that gave me 24 additional buttons.  Made it a great controller for FPS games too.

I did manage to get the mini-stick to work for views.  I had to redo my map file and have each controller listed as a seperate device and then mapped the X and Y axis of the views to the mini-stick.  In game it would only work in Pan View mode and couldn't get it to use my modified head positions.

Thats the only real advantage the X-45 has over the CH stuff. Overall I'd givew the edge to CH for both quality and feel...but the little "mouse stick" on the X-45 is easy to program.

Ack-Ack:

Revinn's got a CH forum at http://www.ch-hangar.com.  In there someone asked exactly the same thing and I posted a script to accomplish it.  It's pretty simple--basically, you simply check for deflection of the microstick x and y axes away from the center position and, if it's far enough in any of the N, NE, E, SE, S, SW, W, NW positions, you assert the keypad key that is appropriate to generate the desired view.

Here's a link to the forum post:

JNOV, thanks again!  I used that script and got the mini-stick to work as a POV just perfectly.  Very nice instructions you posted, easy to follow.  Going to see about adding the differential throttle to Mode 2 on the PT now.  Again, thanks!

Seems like alot of work for something a 8 way hat can do easier with ALOT less headaches to program. I really like the USB version of the CH stuff but that mini-stick on the Prothrottle needs to 'go to the Russian Front'.

I'm glad you were able to make sense of the post!

Delirium:

Sorry, but I've got to disagree with you about the Pro Throttle's mini-stick.  First of all, if you want an eight-way hat, there's already one on the Pro Throttle.  Secondly, having two extra analog axes that you can program to do whatever you want is a huge boon.  In my AH profile, for example, I use the ministick to control the mouse pointer in one mode and, in another mode, use it to implement a differential throttle for twin-engine planes.

You might download the AH profile that I posted on Revvin's page.  I've got an implementation of a differential throttle using the mini-stick in the script that you might find useful.

It wasn't hard at all to make the mini-stick into a POV, just add the script to your .map file, save and download.  And mostly this was for Silat's benefit because he wanted to use the mini-stick for his POV.

I posted on that board asking how I could program the throttle to kick into WEP when firewalled ... to me (coming from the Cougar) this was HUGE.

Nothing better when dogfighting, and using the throttle to kick in and out of WEP instead of pushing a button. Implementation/programming was quite simple.

I have buttons 2 & 4 on the throttle programmed to cycle thru /.salvo 2 ... then /.salvo 6 ... then /.salvo 10 ... then back to 2 ...

I have buttons 2 & 3 on the throttle programmer to look forward and up ... this is handy for me (short thumbs) while dogfighting ... I have all I can do to fly the stick, nevermind trying to move my short-fat thumb to push the POV to look forward and up.

I have the Pro Pedals too, and have the toe breaks programmed to work separately and ONLY when the brake pedal is pushed past 50% deflection.

This allows easy use of the rudder when taxiing without the brakes coming into play. The separate wheel breaks work nice in a P-38 taxiing with 1 engine out ... hehehe.

Ack-Ack,

I'm still using an Analog CH setup, and I'm intrigued by something you said:

I've never before run across anyone talking about any kind of hack or mod for the CH sticks, so you've got me interested...

What kind of mods did you do to get 24 "extra" buttons?

I used to work at CH Products and I was able to get an a first generation Pro Throttle board and add some additional diodes to the circuit board.  I then added a female adaptor to it so I could hook up an extra Pro Throttle with the slider locked in place.  This allowed me to use PTSETUP to program the additional buttons on the 2nd Pro Throttle.  Gave me a total of 48 buttons to play with on the Pro Throttle in addition the buttons on my Jane's Combat Stick.

I see...I figured it had to be some kinda "insider" thing.

So let me see if I have this straight...you attached a second  ProThrot to the daisy-chain via an added Female DB-15 and activated some additional (normally un-assigned) key-matrix lines by adding a few switching/blocking diodes to a 1st Gen circuit board.

I'm assuming that later gen circuit boards do not have the extra available lines, so this is more-or-less a one-off mod.

Too bad, I was hoping I might be able to add some extra functionality. Still, it's something to  think on.

You wouldn't happen to still have a circuit diagram or layout would you?

Thx

I no longer have the schematics for it since it's been like 6 years since I left CH but if you look at the circuit board on your existing Pro Throttle, you will see the area where you can place the additional diodes, 10 I believe.
