Title: Cloud of Dust...
Post by: Mitsu on October 01, 2000, 01:42:00 PM
Hi.

I found new IL-2 Screen shots over Dogfighter yesterday.

it seems Il-2 has realistic tank battle.      (http://bbs.hitechcreations.com/smf/Smileys/default/smile.gif)
 http://www.dogfighter.com/spofs/index.php3#970258149 (http://www.dogfighter.com/spofs/index.php3#970258149)

I like this shot especially!
this dust will be a big advantage for tank killers.      (http://bbs.hitechcreations.com/smf/Smileys/default/smile.gif)

And it's beautiful effect, I think. so, I want to put this effect in AH if this one ain't heavy.

What about this?      (http://bbs.hitechcreations.com/smf/Smileys/default/biggrin.gif)

Thanks.

Someone's fixed up an urban vehicles map that has to be some of the most fun I've had in AH in ages. A small city surrounded by hills - ducking behind buildings and lying in wait to ambush other tanks, or creeping up the hill and going hull-down is just too tactical and fun for words  (http://bbs.hitechcreations.com/smf/Smileys/default/smile.gif)

Sorry, but what universe you from?

On my planet I grew up as a farm boy.  The ONLY time our heavy machinery EVER threw up that much dust was with the farm impliment down into bare, dry soil digging it all up and floping it over.

Thats it.

When we drive a heavy machine over grass nothing gets kicked up but a few clods of mud once in awhile.  Thats it.  There is no cloud.

Where you going @ 25 mph with tracks?

I've seen modern tanks on exercises. On muddy/wet grass, they throw up mud and grass, but no cloud. On a dry non asphalt road; huge cloud.

Yes.   (http://bbs.hitechcreations.com/smf/Smileys/default/smile.gif)

Looks like the tanks in the screenshots are driving across grasslands to me.

You latter comment about a dirt road.  Yes, there is a cloud then.  But I don't see a dirt road in the screenshots.

No, sorry.  I am unconvinced, and I have personal experience to back up my statements.  Those "dust clouds" you see in those tank screenshots are overdone.  Trust me.   (http://bbs.hitechcreations.com/smf/Smileys/default/wink.gif)

Hans, I do believe you qualify as the new AH "Dust Cloud" expert. You have to contact Funked for the development group and get the password to the private coding area.

There, you can give input on unreleased versions. Your help, just like the real combat pilots, WWII vets, history buffs, and guys with tons of historical numbers on the plane sets, will be of great benefit to the community.

Thanks-

You want realism, but you want dust clouds or diesel exaust so massive that you cannot see thru it?

No.  All it would be is an extra detail with no benefit to the game.  Sorry, but your asking for the wrong things.

If you want the tanks in Aces High to be more acurate, then ask for treelines, a Zeiss sight, and alot of small hills and ditches.

Not a smokescreen to make you stand out like a big, red, bullseye for the next cannon Hawg-dweeb.

Hmm,
allthough I'm not a tanker by training, I've spent a considerable time in them (BMP2, MTLB, Pasi, BTR 60). Tanks can throw up a huge cloud on a dry ground, and sometimes the exhaust is so thick, you want to womit. It all depends on the circumstances.

What also needs improvement, imho, is the effect artillery (and bombs too, I imagine) has on the ground. An arty btn's salvoes will quickly have a dramatic effect on visibility.   (Of course we do not have arty yet...)  (http://bbs.hitechcreations.com/smf/Smileys/default/wink.gif)

Hi

Russian tanks spewed diesel exhaust in clouds almost as big as that. The rear decks Of KV-1s and Stalins were almost always covered with tremendous amounts of black soot. As for the dust issue rolling along a dry dusty area like the russian stepps i summer did make for lots of dust flying. This is why tanks were always so dirty and look so drab and lifeless in pictures, they were always coverd in layers of dust they kicked up.

thanks GRUNHERZ

Dust... I know about dust.
I'm from west Texas - now there's some dust. I've spent far too many hours in my youth on a tractor, and I can tell you that as Hans said, with an implement is down, there's dust.  When the soil is wet or your on vegetation, there's not.  On dirt roads, there's a buttload of it - unless of course there's been recent rain - which there's not a lot of in west Texas.

My problem with ground vehicles is not just the lack of dust/exhaust, but the scaling.  Ground vehicles just appear too small.  From gun film that I've seen, ground vehicles appeared much larger than they are rendered in AH.  Fix that, and you may not need dust. I agree that there should be more terrain releif (ditches, treelines) for ground vehicles, but not unless the scaling is better.

Looks like war-weary's. KV-1's had a tendency to do that going through gears because of the loading, but no way that's road dust. Too thick.

People need to keep in mind that 25mph isn't going to throw up a huge plume (besides the fact tanker's aren't going to run around at top speed all the time due to coolant issues). From the war footage I've seen of tanks rolling through fields and dirt roads, it's not a huge towering dust cloud...more like a thin haze that follows the tank.

And don't even compare modern tanks to the Pz-IV, they go nearly twice as fast and have alot more tread surface on the road  (http://bbs.hitechcreations.com/smf/Smileys/default/smile.gif)

Hey, all I am guilty of is trying to use some common sense.

Grass, the green stuff in both of the orginal posts, does a nice job of holding the ground together.  No dust trail left by passing vehicles.

You all are commenting on things like "on dirt roads" or "in dry conditions" or "in the desert".  My argument?  Your absolutely CORRECT......but thats not what you see in both screenshots posted by Mitsu.

And although it has not rained in the AH main arena in over a year, the grass has not died yet leading me to conclude...its not dry conditions.

So, having huge dustclouds/smoking engines doesn't seem right to me.

In a brown desert terrain...go for it.  Huge dust clouds.  Thats totally acceptable to me.

Hans.
