Whats next, leeches? :rofl
-
Nah,
You use those in the US!

Seriously though, if we have an efficient, easy to obtain biological substitute which performs the job, why not use it?

Maggots are used to eat out infections, leeches are used to keep blood flow in reattached limbs...
They work well, on both sides of the pond.
-
During survival training we were taught to let the maggots eat any dead flesh of a wound and (ugh) eat the maggots for protein.
If i remeber correctly let them feed until u feel any pain then pull them off.
Leeches are very imprtant in regaining blood flow to re-attached limbs. Met a guy that worked for this company.

I think we've finally found a use for politicians, estate agents and lawyers.

In defense of this method...
They've been using maggots and leeches here at Harborview Medical for years.
The leeches help in stimulating blood vein manufacturing on burn patients, and maggots are great for cleaning infection, much better than anything they can perscribe or inject.
-
maggots only eat dead flesh not living tissue, they can clean out a wound.

I'm going to have to back Ripsnort on this. As disgusting as it sounds, it works just that much.
BTW, leech saliva is an anti-coagulent. It thins blood out. They are used for limb reattachment so that the body doesn't immediately reject the limb.

Rip is right maggots and leeches for that matter have been used for centuries to good effect. Even here in the US.

I'm famliar with their history of medical uses. However I do think its kinda funny considering some of the stories we have seen on the BBS regarding use of paper clips and other irregural devices in some euro hospitals, IRRC the UK just like this article. But I'm really surprised at the resonable responses, I mean I even used real live wiggling bait. :D
