This is a picture of my grandmother. She was a regular 'Rosie the Riveter' during WWII. She did riveting on airplane wings for Eastern Aircraft in Trenton, New Jersey. We are trying to figure out what kind of uniform the man seated next to her on the right is wearing. The picture was taken in New York City in 1943. I'd appreciate anyone's help.

He is wearing a dress.

Supe,
I'm no expert, but:
Looks like a "Line" Lieutenant Commander in the Merchant Marine given the sleeve embroidery.
Look top row, left most device; seems to match his sleeve.

Small world! My mom and dad grew up around Trenton. Mom's from Pennington and Dad was from acoss the river in Newtown, Pennsylvania. Mom's 5 brother's went to war from that area, along with my dad of course.
I spent a little time in Pennington while we were stationed at McGuire. Nice area.

Looks like a Naval uniform of some kind.

My Guess is Mechant Marine.
I'd also query what the Canadian Naval Officer Dress is.
Good luck

Right, Funky. 1943 Line officer of the Merchant Marine, NYC/East Coast. Wonder if he served in the Atlantic convoys. There was a job for nancy-boys, eh?

How is it incompatible with homosexuality ?

My Grandad was in the Merchant Navy. Sailed Russian convoys for sure, not sure about the rest of his service. He never talked about it to me and apparently it was rarely mentioned after the war.
My parents have a picture of him in uniform in their hallway. People are always remarking how much I look like him, apparently.

he's got that limey look :)

its all in the teeth :p

Awesome Toad! I think you nailed it dead on.
And please children, let's refrain from the of color remarks. You're actually starting to offend me now.

Great picture Superfly! I have a similar picture of my parents in Oklahoma City during the war. My dad was in his "pinks and greens" and there is another couple sitting at the table with them and the guy is wearing a 20th Air Force uniform. Gotta love those WWII photos.
:aok

Excellent pic Superfly!
My mom was also a 'Rosie the Riveter' during WWII. She helped to build P-38's in L.A. during the war. That is where my mom and dad met. :)
Are you trying to find out who the fellow is?

<> Superfly. glad to hear about your grandmother helping the war effort. (not that probably wasn't a wonderful person without)
is she still alive? if so how is she doing? also if she is... soak up all the history you can. these wonderful patriots are leaving us too quickly. so many memories are being lost.

I apologize Superfly.

LOL SUPERFLY,
Granny goes out on the town, in NYC - 1943, with a sailor... and bring two books? If anything is intriguing about this picture its why did she bring the books? Was she that studious? Or were the books an excuse to blow off a potentially boring blind date? (Sorry, I only have a half an hour, I have to study for a chemistry exam tomorrow.)

Me too, that was too much.

The lady next to her looks like Bette Midler. :D

My dad sailed on Liberty Ships during the war. I just got a copy of his DD-214 in the mail a few weeks ago. Atlantic, Pacific and Mediterranean-Middle East War Zone campaign ribbons. Considering the casualty rates the Merchant Marine suffered during the WWII, especially the guys sailing out of New York harbor, I gotta figure I'm pretty damn lucky to be here!

Cool picture Superfly! My grandmother wasn't a 'Rosie the Riveter' girl, but she worked for the government during the war. When I was a little girl she told me her job was taking the engineer's instructions on how to use and service the first radars and translating them into laymen's terms for the guys out in the field to use. We still have her 'top secret' notebooks somewhere. She was one smart lady, too bad she has alzheimers now.
