Title: America loses a hero
Post by: HavocTM on February 24, 2004, 01:07:12 PM
This week, America lost a hero.

Colonel Raymond A. Syptak flew 30 B-17 missions in World War II, won numerous medals for bravery and saved the lives of his crewmen.

Col. Syptak served with the 8th Air Force, 457th Bomb Group and was the grandfather of Falcnwng, founder of the AW/AH squad Birds of Prey.

Please feel free to visit our memorial to Col. Syptak on the BOPS home page:

http://www.bops.us

And visit the 457th page for more information on this American hero and the others who helped keep our country safe as part of the Greatest Generation:

http://www.457thbombgroup.org

Col. Syptak, and all of our heroes past and present.  Thank you all who are serving or have served to protect our country.

Thanks,
Havoc

You're kidding, right. You must be. You couldn't possibly be serious.

To the Colonel and his family, my best regards and heartfelt condolences.

Nath, if that was an attempt at a troll, it was a poorly designed and tactless one.

The passing of another veteran of that war should be shown a bit more respect, regardless of what country they were from.  And that it was the grandfather of someone from AH should only add to that consideration.

It seems like you'd have been better off seperating the real history from the game, because it wasn't funny

Col. Syptak

A little story relayed to me by a family friend whose last name was "Woods".  Very British...very proper.

I showed him AH and he was amazed...his father had been a high ranking officer in the Royal Air Force.

He asked if we had bombers in AH...and I showed him the B17.

He then said, "You know...one night my father had a group of officers over to the house for dinner.  I listened from the stairs, not daring to show myself as I was supposed to be in bed.  This particular night the conversation turned to the Americans.  A few of the group began to "bad mouth" the "Yanks", with the typical "Over paid, over sexed and over here" type natter.  Well, it was the first and only time I have ever seen my father (who actually had the nickname "Tiger" Woods) get angry.  He turned on the offending officers and said, "Those boys are dying like flies over Germany (referring to the B17 crews).  They are over here to help us defeat Germnay and are the bravest and most self sacrificing bunch of men I have ever had the honour of meeting.  If you wish to continue with this discussion you can do it outside, on your way home.  NOONE will speak badly of those brave boys in my house."

Search "terrorflieger"

Quote
To this, my questioner, who identified herself as Erika replied:

"We both inhabit that same past: you as an airman and I as a young child. You delivered bombs; I was terrified of them."  The word, "terrified" had a resonance. To the German people, the air crews of the RAF and the 8th Air Force were known as "terrorfliegers." Was Erika's use of "terrified" an allusion to this idiom? Intrigued by the possibility, I asked her: "Was I the indifferent and immoral terrorflieger and you the innocent and terrorized child below?" and I learned that yes, this was true.

Guys Please,

This post is a memorial to a fellow AHer's grandfather and that is all.  There were heroes and villains on both sides of the war.

All I ask is that you empathize with a fellow pilot on the loss of a family member and that is all.

Please restrict your politics and opinions to another forum.  Thank you for understanding.

Havoc, instead consider having Skuzzy delete the stupidity posted by Nath and tell him not to post here in this thread, and let everyone else edit their posts accordingly.

Nath,

If you want to discuss the merits of your position, start a thread on it. To flame a memorial posting is a very indecent thing to do.

It's odd that someone would linger on a forum based on a game that mimics war, and yet seems to have such a problem with war itself.

You should grow up.
