Winner of last year's Academy Award for Best Animated Feature, Hayao Miyazaki's Spirited Away does just what the title suggests, wrapping the main characters and the audience in its ethereal spell and transporting them to an alternate reality which must appear as odd to modern audiences as Alice in Wonderland did when it debuted. Chihiro (Daveigh Chase) and her parents are in the middle of relocating to their new home, when they stop at what appears to be a deserted restaurant, full of food but with no people in sight. Her parents dig right in but Chihiro, sensing something amiss, refuses to join them. As darkness approaches, she discovers that her instincts were correct, and that the place they've stumbled upon is actually a resort for spirits who have come to rest and be pampered. Surrounded by fantastic, shape-shifting spirit creatures, Chihiro finds that her parents have changed shape themselves, turning into pigs that will be used to feed the spirits. In order to save them, she enlists the help of a boy named Haku (Jason Marsden) and a man named Kamaji (David Ogden Stiers) to weave her way through the spirit funhouse and to avoid being entranced by the owner of the spa, the evil magician Yubaba (Suzanne Pleshette), who they warn will try to imprison her forever. Chihiro's innate goodness shines through with the help of the Miyazaki's steady and precise hand, and the spirits are more fully realized than most animated features allow, making them tangible, complex beings rather than one-dimensional spooks. -Heather Campbell

Very good indeed. My daughter (5 years) loves it too.

Another excellent animation movie (almost mute, so everybody can watch it):
