1. I am a World War 2 aircraft.
2. I have been flown by many of the world's air forces.
3. Many of my type still fly today.
4. I was rebuilt as a completely new aircraft in the 1960s, and sold as an executive aircraft.
5. I was studied as a tactical attack fighter by my country's Air Force as late as 1980.
Who am I ?

North American B-26 (formerly A-26)??
-
A4? I'm pretty sure this was the designation. The plane that gave CAS to ground troops in Vietnam during rescue ops.

P51 by any chance?
-
P-51 with the Cavalear conversion.
Way too simple (http://bbs.hitechcreations.com/smf/Smileys/default/wink.gif)

C-47
-
Yes, I second the gooney.
-
C47. History Channel had a nice spot on it last night, although I don't remember the questions posed here as being answered in the piece, it would not surprise me.

A-26.
Although to be quite honest when I first saw the "topic" the answer that came right to my mind was "??? A ZIT!" - and in John Belushi's voice.

Think this line is the key:
I was rebuilt as a completely new aircraft in the 1960s, and sold as an executive aircraft.

Ah, too late to answer first, but this is easily the P51 Cavalier.
And yes, it was too easy. (http://bbs.hitechcreations.com/smf/Smileys/default/wink.gif)

Sopwith Camel..
Think Poland still uses them to this day.. (http://bbs.hitechcreations.com/smf/Smileys/default/smile.gif)

And they'd probably still get a 1:1 k:d against the Luftwaffe! (http://bbs.hitechcreations.com/smf/Smileys/default/smile.gif)

Funked's picture is/was the "Piper Enforcer" if IRC. It's a P-51 derivative but it isn't the Cavalier. It has an Allison turboprop for one thing.
I'm pretty sure we're getting it the same time as the Me-262 and both will be perked.

my guess would be the A-4 skyraider.
-
Westy, the Cavalier was a P51, modified with the addition of a Rolls Royce Dart turboprop engine and larger vertical stab.

CC Dago. I was thinking of the Piper.

"I was studied as a tactical attack fighter by my country's Air Force as late as 1980."
I doubt a DC-3 (AC47) could be considered by any strech of the imagination to be a 'tactical attack fighter'. LOL
WWII Lineage; with the caveat of having been flown by many of the worlds air forces would let out the uber-Piper... hmmmm
So.. that leaves the BT2D-1, flown in 1944:

Here's what they looked like in the 70's when the last of 'em rolled off the production line.

I think yer right Ammo. Looks like a Skyraider to me. (http://bbs.hitechcreations.com/smf/Smileys/default/smile.gif)
Since I'm only a few blocks from what used to be Republic/Fairchild, and since I cried real tears when the jigs and fixtures fer the A10 Warthog were scrapped, I'd say the Aussies were probably lookin at McDonnel/Douglas for quotes on lighting up Skyraider production.. since McDonnel/Douglas at that time still had the jigs and fixtures for the A1's in hand.
My best guess anyway. (http://bbs.hitechcreations.com/smf/Smileys/default/smile.gif)

Actually, there were a number of A-26's converted to fast executive service. Saw one out at Chino a number of years back ago being converted back to mil A-26 version.
C-47s already had a civilian version - the DC-3. Maybe some were converted to civil use but I'd bet that they stayed as cargo and not executive service.
Hey Mustang fans - go HERE (http://www.p51.mustangsmustangs.com/Shows/P51gathering/index.shtml). You won't be disappointed!

The Buffalo?
-
Well maybe the question WAS too easy.. but there were sure a lot of incorrect answers.
It's the P-51 Mustang. Post WW2 it outfitted many of the air forces of the world. In the 1960's it was rebuilt by Cavalier Aircraft as a two-seat executive version. And as late as 1980, as the Piper Enforcer, it was under examination by the USAF as a counter-insurgency light attack fighter.
Hmmm.. gonna have to find a harder question next time (http://bbs.hitechcreations.com/smf/Smileys/default/smile.gif)
