Title: Do you smoke? Are you a tree hugger?
Post by: GtoRA2 on February 27, 2004, 01:55:20 PM
If you are I bet you are a hypocrite and should have to eat the cigarette butts you throw everywhere!!

I have a tree huggin liberal budy who smokes like a train, and gues where his butts go? Yeah not in the garbage..

I see it all the time too.

Smokers suck.

They should be forced to take a 15% pay cut. Why? Cause they take 15,000 ****ing brakes a day to feed their stupid adiction!

Yes, no, and no.  Perhaps you should start smoking, sounds like you need something to relax with.

well I've taken a 5 min smoke break every hour on the hour for my whole 15 year career.  I've had about 6 drafting jobs durring that career and in all but 2 of them I was the most productive draftsman by an order of magnitude.  ALL of my bosses have noticed this and told me to go smoke when ever I feel the urge :D

Any employer should be free to offer lower salary to a smoker. Probably any employer is free to do so except in union shops.

Anyway, the smokers contribute equally towards social security and healthcare even though they are sure to live much less and die quickly and inexpensively right around their retirement age.

With social security/healthcare insolvency pending, we should not discourage smoking too hard.

Is there any data on whether smokers' contribution to social security and medicaid/medicare is net positive?  Do their contributions cover their share of the benefits handed out?

Yes, there were studies done and tobacco companies even used them in other countries, but not in US. They decided it would not be good for their image to advertise how efficiently they are killing americans but I believe they demonstrated to the government of Checholsovakia or Hungary few years ago exactly how much they save on healthcare/pension expenses. It would be worse for US where life expectancy is greater and expensive healthcare options more available.

Smokers tend to drop dead just around retirement age from quick and relatively inexpensive diseases like cancer.
They do not spend years in a hospital on expensive life-support drawing pension benefits.

Of course it may change. The anti-cancer treatments are getting better at keeping people alive and have fewer deadly side effects than they used to.

that would be true if the years smoking took off your age came at the end.  so that you cruise along with normal health, the same as the non-smokers, until one day you just kick over dead a few years too early from smoking.

unfortunately thats not the way it works.  smoking doesn't steal years off the end of your life, it steals them from your prime, you age faster and go through just as long of a frail, sick, unproductive time as non-smokers.  you just start falling apart at a younger age, and all your medicare expenes for your hospitalisation and your little O2 bottle you're dragging around come out of the same social security fund.

even so, singling people out because the smoke is stupid.  next they'll be nosing into all parts of your life to decide your pay/tax level.  whats your colesteral count? how many minutes did you exercise today?  vitamin police, did you take your pills today?

we've already got enough gov't nannying going on.  back in the old book 1984 we where warned about 'big brother',  all the while the real threat was 'big mother'

That's exactly why the government shouldn't be involved in health care at all.   :)

If I want to pay for health care that's limited to nonsmokers, I should be able to - assuming someone is willing to provide it.  If I want to pay for health care for smokers, I should be able to do that too - but by the same token, I should be able to opt out of that health care as well.  If the government is doing it, there's no option to decline the "coverage."

capt. apathy: that would be true if the years smoking took off your age came at the end.

But it does. In general, once a smoker experience serious problems related to smoking, he/she goes down fast. I do not have data on hand but it is a fact. Smokers live shotrer and cost less to die than non-smokers.

all your medicare expenes for your hospitalisation and your little O2 bottle you're dragging around come out of the same social security fund

Everyone dies and a healthy person who dies because his/her organs wear off may take years to die - all the time being hooked up to expensive life-support.

Phillip Morris did a secret study for Czech government showing that if they raised taxes on cigarets more people would quit smoking, hence live longer hence make their version of Social Security insolvent quicker...

and then someone published it :D

Smokers are an excellent asset to any country - they pay more in tax, they die by the time they're sixty, no long pensions to pay out, no long illness - get the big C dead in two years, no old age retirement homes - smoke as much as you like - just don't do it near me.

Hey I have no problem with smoking per say. It just the tools that claim they are all about the envirnment, give **** cause I drive a Yukon and then throw thier butts everywhere.

Its just nasty.

On the work thing, Udie, hey cudos to you for being a good employee, and I no problem with people taking brakes if the job gets done. But, I have supervised for more smokers who where TOTAL slackers and I would have to go find them on their smoke brake just for them to do their jobs.

I think some of the restricitons on smoking are really stupid.

Here in Cali no smoking in bars or restaraunts. Stupid.

It should be up to the owner.

We had our parking lot cleaned.

The building manager then send out an email the next day...

He was pissed, we have ashtrays all over the place outside. He went around and picked up over 300 butts one day  after the cleanup! lol.

The email said, "smokers, if you do not go out and clean up your butts and make sure they find the ash trays we have at every entrance in the future we will ban smoking on the grounds! I just picked up 300 24 hours after we had the parkinglot cleaned!!"

a year or so later?  Parking lot overrun with Butts. Why is it so hard to put them in the ashtrays?

GTO, before you get your Pampers in a twist, materials in cig butts are biodegradable. Cotton and paper.

RPM? are you a smoker? you can admit it.

There are all kinds of things that are bio degradable that are still considered litter, can I come dump a bunch of paper in your yard?

There is no excuse for tossing your butts on the ground when there is an ashtray 3 ****ing feet away.

What I hate is when companies put their employee smoking section right at the entrance to their establishment.  Nothing worse than walking thru 3-5 people smoking away, and you have to walk through it to get in.

Good image for the company

LOL how am I being unclear? DO you toss your butts all over the place and litter? Or do you throw them where they belong, in the trash or ashtrays?  If you are not a litterbug, then I have no problem with you.

Hell did I not just post that I have no problems with smokers other then that and even would like Cali to get rid of the anti smoking in public bull****?

Why do smokers get a free pass to litter everywhere they go?
Title: Do you smoke? Are you a tree hugger?
Post by: rpm on February 27, 2004, 06:07:34 PM
I can admit it? Never knew I had to hide it. If you are so concerned for the environment, why aren't you driving an alternative fueled vehicle? Have you ever, in your entire life, thrown a coke bottle out the window? The plastic that bottle is made from will take 100's of years to decompose, if it does at all, while the cig butt takes only a few years of sun, wind and rain to return to Mother Earth.
Admit it GTO, your a bigot to those who choose to enjoy the smooth, full flavored, richness of tobacco. Nothing short of having it 100% your way will be good enough, will it?

LOL I have no problem if you smoke, hell you can even smoke sitting next to me in a restaraunt! Does not bother me one bit as a mater of fact, my dad smoke 4 packs a day tell he died. Heate with one hand most of the time so he could smoke with the other.

all I am asking is A: for the enviro nuts that smoke to stop being *****y little hipocrits, and throw there garbage where it belongs.

B: for smokers in general to use garbage cans or ashtrays!

Not very hard.

I am not advocating smokers death camps or anything!

with the laws here that say you can't smoke in a building at work (bars excluded), a lot of the paper mills are just going to no smoking on the property.

they say it's out of consideration of the health of the non-smoker.  so the guy next to me can't have his smoke, meanwhile I'm burning and welding on steel thats impregnated with chemicals, smoke pouring everywhere, you could have 20 guys smoking and you wouldn't be able to detect it over the work environment.

IMO let them smoke.  I'd rather breath the ocasional cigarette smoke than work with 30 guys who haven't had a smoke in 8 hours.

Lung cancer is untreatable, but if they get other types of cancer, it sucks all the health insurance money down the tubes.

On a positive note, tobacco contributed majorly to the success of the American colonies.

Im glad to say that you are wrong.

My mother had lung cancer and she is now healthy....so is several others that she had treatment with.

Would not recomend cancer tho, it was hell when she went through it and i would not wish that on anyone.

That was one of the things that made me quit.
