Title: Need help on Sking saving in BMP
Post by: airmess on February 28, 2004, 04:11:17 AM
Hi

I've worked on a skin with photoshop and did the following steps on saving procedure:

1. Changed mode to indexed colors 8 bit
2. Saved the former PSD file into BMP, 256 colors into the new 109G101 directory

The originally exported files has a size of 1026 KB and my own files end up with 1028 KB.

The result is that i get a white wing instead with my skin.

What do i wrong ... any idea ?

Just a guess,
Your file may be 1024 x 1025.

A hair too big.

airmess,

As long as your skin file is of the correct dimensions (1024 x 1024) and has been “Indexed” to 256 colors, then your file is okay

The first time you viewed your skin, a version of the skin was saved in a subdirectory of:

C:\Aces High II\cache (The drive letter may be different on your computer.)

Once you updated your wing skin, there is a mismatch with the cache and what is in the “skin/109g101” folder.  This mismatch causes strange results.

How to Fix:
Look for a “109g101” folder in the cache and delete its contents.  If you Alt-Tab out of AH2 to delete the contents, be sure you are back in the Tower before Alt-Tabbing out or your skin will not update.  Next time you “launch”, your new skin will be re-written to the cache and you will see your new skin correctly displayed.

Have fun.

That solved some of my problems too, I didn't see that information anywhere else, thanks!

Can you guess what I might be doing wrong with the B17?  File name, size and color depth is correct, (used a clean copy of the default) cache cleared yet I get CTD from the hanger whenever I select the skin and after the first attempt, CTD anytime I click the B17.  Must delete b17g1 folders etc to clear up the problem.:(

Easyscor,

CTDs are usually caused by the bitmaps not having the correct format – size, color, etc.  (I think any alpha files ( “*_a.bmp”) have to be Grayscale.)  Any file in the “skin/b17g1” that is not correct will cause a CTD.  Therefore, if you modified MARKING.bmp for example and forgot to index it to 256 colors, you will CTD when you select the skin using that MARKING.bmp file.  Once that skin has been selected, it is saved as the “default” version.  You will then CTD when you go to the Hanger because your skin is displayed on the aircraft in the hanger.  Then your stuck – can’t Launch or go to the Hanger to select a different skin or aircraft without CTDing.  The problem is clearly in the "skin/b17g1" folder since deleting it solves the CTDs.

Recommendation:
Go back through and make sure your skin formats are correct.

Tip:
Only place in the “skin/b17g1” the files that you have modified.  Any missing files will be fetched from the default B-17.

Hope that helps.

Right, that's why I was using only copies of the bit map files, b17g1.bmp and b17g2.bmp, which I pasted into my skins/b17g1 Folder.  I figured untouched copies of the original files would be the foolproof way to start and it worked for me with the fighters until I mucked it up.  Your pointer to the cache folder fixed those but not the B17.  I deleted all evidence of the work I'd done and started over but no joy.

I guess it's something subtle like a cache file that still needs to be cleared, or a skin list file somewhere.

Thanks for the help.

by making a Abdobe Illustrator file for the draw of lines and dots, the file has been resized automaticly on 1024 x 1026. That was the problem.

Thanks for the feedback and help.
