Title: Do you cry at the movies?
Post by: Wanker on March 01, 2004, 01:30:16 PM
I do. I don't tend to display a lot of emotion in public, at least when it comes to being sad. But put me in a dark theater, with a good tear-jerker drama, and the floodgates open.

The scene that always gets me, even though I've seen the film at least twenty times, is the scene in "Saving Private Ryan" where the mother of the Ryan's sees the army car driving up the driveway, and when she gets to the front steps, she realizes what that means, and just collapses on the front steps. No matter how many times I've seen it, it never fails to make me cry.

Another scene, in the same film, is at the very beginning, with the old vet collapsing in front of the grave of his comrade.

And how many here can say they're ever watched the end of "Brian's Song" without being completely overwhelmed?

Which scene(s) makes you cry without fail?

Never cried - some movies made me 'tear up' though.

Passion
Glory

All I can think of right now.

Yes, almost every time.

Interestingly enough, it's almost exclusively when I have to pay the cashier those prices to get in and see the same old schlocky car chases, explosions and pointless no-plot storylines.

Yep..same reaction here...It's the only movie that does THAT to me...Funny thing is that when I saw it in the theatre with some buds...I didn't dare move my head to see if anyoneone else was..I listened for the snivelling..Didn't hear any...Oh well, must have been only me.

Now about that scene in "Titanic" at the end where Leonardo let go the wreckage...All I could hear were people grabbing for their buttery napkins.. "Sniff...Boo hoo!"...I was the opposite.."Muhaha!"

"If you are able, save for them a place inside of you and save one backward glance for the places they can no longer go. Be not ashamed to say you loved them, though you may or may not have always. Take what they have left and what they have taught you with their dying. And in that time when men decide they feel safe and call the war insane, take one moment to embrace those gentile heroes you left behind."  Major Michael Davis O'Donnell, 1 January 1970. Dak To, Vietnam

The words from the end of Hamburger Hill.

The only flick that has EVER gotten me misty is Hook, during the part where Robin Williams is remembering stuff in the burned out tree trunk. When he says "Daddy, I'm a daddy!" it almost always gets me. Aside from that, I didn't even quirk a brow when they shot Ol Yeller.

Yeah, I remember having the same feeling after watching both of Deborah Foreman's two '80s movies.  "I sat through two hours of mediocre film-making and didn't even see any breast curve?  The pain!  Oh, the pain!"

It really depends on how mentally stable i am when i go see the movie hehe...

If im stressed out, generally feeling bad and stuff and then i see a movie then the tears can come...

Other days they dont come... it all depends =)

Also if its a situation you can relate to...

Yeha, I cry every time I see Saving Private Ryan as well.  Every time I have to sit through the rediculously ham-handed schlocky opening and closing scenes in the cemetary with the old Ryan.  I cry for the fact that Spielburg couldn't resist tacking his typical sappy mush in where it wasn't necessary.  I cry for the thought of how much better this film would have been without these scenes.

That being said, I'm more than man enough to admit that I get teary eyed now and then during a film.  Having no emotions (or masking them) doesn't make you any more masculine.

I haven't cried at a movie since I was like 12 at "On Golden Pond".  There's been a bunch that made me well up. The end of SPR when he asks his wife if he's led a good life makes me well up.

Quite often, the end of "The Joy Luck Club" especially.  And what pisses me off is that I know I'm being played with, and having exact reaction to contrived movies that they want me to have.

In Schindler's List when little girl's red coat is seen in a pile, that along with the amazing score by John Williams really brings on a sense of horror at mankind and sympathy.

Me also when it comes to the emotion thing.
Not man enough to allow myself to let the floodgates open......
Yeah find myself holding back at SPR and Brian's Song (the orig one) also. Add the scene in Field of Dreams when Kevin Costner's character finds his father (when his father was still young and strong) and asks to play a game of catch.

I always remember one movie theatre in Springfield,IL which always had sad movies. Being a redneck town, the guys watching the movies didn't want to be embarrassed by people seeing them cry, so the theatre provided single person viewing lounges so that people could watch the movie alone. They even provided a box of tissues on a table in front of the chair.

Oh wait, it was a porno movie theatre.
Never mind.

You kidding?

I cheered.   Generations was a great movie for the simple reason that we got to see Kirk's demise twice.

who is celine delon?  Bad enough I haven't seen 2/3 of the movies mentioned.   Well actually... I made a concious effort to avoid 2/3 of the movies mentioned.

Once I gave in to one of my wives and watched a chick movie... The prince of cries or tides or something...    the first 3 or four hours of the movie were merely painful but after about 6 or 9 hours of it with no end in sight..... I admit to allmost breaking down and weeping.    I learned that I would not do well under torture from that experiance.

One film brought a tear, but I was 13 years old. The bit at the end of Schindler's List where he's saved the people and he's about to drive off to escape the Russians. Schindler breaks down, saying that he could have saved a couple more if he'd sold his watch (or other personal valuables), and his 'saved' tell him he did all he could. Before that, I don't think you have time to really contemplate each atrocity before the next one comes along. Somehow, that final scene brings it all to a head.
