Title: So, we ready for that AH2 GV Event?
Post by: Sabre on March 01, 2004, 04:54:46 PM
Since HTC claims that the "GV falls through terrain" bug is finally squashed, who's up for an un-official ground-war special event in the beta arena?  This would be a "Battle of the Bulge" scenario, with one side taking Pnzr-IVs, and the other side with a mix of Pnzr-IVs and Tigers.  Each side would get a number of M-3s to act as scounts.  This would be a one-life event, except killed players would be allowed to join other player's crews as gunners.  The goal would be for the German side to occupy Bastogne (the town at A1).  This means to have all the town's guns down and to get at least one vehicle to the center of the town.  No aircraft would be allowed, to simulate the weather front that prevented Allied air power's participation in the battle.  On other rule: drivers and crews may not exit from their tank or M-3 until it is completely destroyed (blown up).  This simulates the effect of artillery on the crew's reluctance to leave a damaged vehicle.

Who's interested?

Sounds good, I'd participate.

But who's going to host and setup?

Barring any schedule conflicts, I'd be interested.

Because this is an unofficial event, and because I don't have CM privilages in the beta arena, we would be relying completely on the honor system.  Back before we had a CM Corps, I ran a number of unofficial scenarios and events.  I would be happy to act as CM for the purposes of balancing the sides, laying out the rules, picking the town to use as Bastogne, and providing the choices of possible starting bases for the Germans.  While we cannot keep people not participating away from the operating area, most people will be a good sport if we ask them to leave the area.  It's not a perfect world, but I think we can still pull it off and have a blast.

One thing I need is for two people to step up as an Allied and Axis CO.  This will be a single-frame event, so there's not too much work envolved.  Volunteers?  We'll pick a day and time, probably a Saturday evening, around 2100 EST.

Point of clarification: you want M-3s doing the scouting, or M-8s?

Has the M-8 been added?  If so, I'd include mostly M-8s, but have a couple of M-3s as well.  The M-3's could have vehicle supplies to repair and re-arm the tanks.  Once they drop their supplies, they could then act as scouts.

You're right, the M8 isn't in AH2 yet.

A note about gv supplies, though: anyone can use them as long as they are close enough to the supplies, even enemy gvs.

Well, that's realistic, isn't it?  Keeping the enemy away from your supply points was always a consideration.

Sooo... lets start advertising in the general.  I'll ask Skuzzy about an addition to the MA MOTD that everyone seems to click off ;)

Organized events like this are necessary for bug squashing and other testing.

Saturday.  This saturday?  What time exactly?

Bit late for me, even for a Saturday (2.00 am Sunday).  Any chance of a touch earlier?  :)

How about 1900 EST, then?  Still a bit late for our friends across the pond, but better than 0200 their time.

I'll get a message out on the general boards.  I'm thinking about a week from this Saturday.  That'll give us time to get organized.

Title: Event Design Considerations
Post by: Sabre on March 05, 2004, 01:31:33 PM
There are two ways to set this up.  One results in combat occurring within 10 minutes of the start of the event, but takes a lot of the guesswork, suspense, and maneuver element out of it.  In this first case, we’d use the town at A3 (currently Bishop).  It has two Knight spawn points within a couple miles of there, but separated a bit from each other.  The Allies would spawn on the base and be given a 5-minute head start to reach the town; the Germans would spawn at either or both spawn points to the east and north east of the town.  The thing is, this set up would likely result in a set-piece battle, with the defenders simply entrenched in the town and the attackers assaulting these prepared positions.  It certainly limits the attackers options, as one of his spawn points is actually within visual range.

The second set up option is to pick an airbase with a town (to play the part of Bastogne) that has no enemy spawn points nearby, and make the German forces spawn at their own base.  This would result in, on average, an hour drive to reach their objectives.  However, it would be a tactically more interesting situation, since the Allies could actually send out scouts to locate them, set up ambushes, attack and retreat, i.e. mobile warfare.  The Germans for their part would be free to do the same, with more freedom to select their routes to target to take advantage of terrain.  It would certainly last longer this way.

In the end, the best choice will depend on how many people show up.  If we get a small number (twenty or less), option 1 is the better choice to insure everyone sees actions.  If we were to get a larger number, then option 2 becomes viable.  While the drive to target is around an hour for the tanks (half that for the M-3s), action would likely occur within the first half hour – this assumes the Allies come out to meet the Germans.

Any thoughts?

not really unless if your talking ammo in game, yes.  realistic no , most of the ammo were of different calibers and would not work from country to country

From your thread in the Anouncements

"Event day and time is 1900 EST on Saturday, 13 March"

I'm in but I can't make it until after CAP so I'll be a little late.  Will join whichever side is short handed.

Swoop of the CM Corps has asked if we could move the time to 8 PM EST (2000 EST for those in the Air Force; for those in the Marines, that's when Mickey's big hand is on the 12 and his little hand is on the 8;) ).  This is to allow those participating in the Saturday CAP event to finish there, hit the can, grab a fresh beer, and participate in the Battle of the Bulge.

Sorry to hear it Emodin.  Feel free to drop by when you get home.  I'm sure someone will need a gunner.
