I've seen profiles of that particular bird done in a couple places.  I also found a few photos of another variation that was used by 3 and 208 Squadrons in the Desert Airwar.

It was referred to as Sand & Spaghetti camo and was done to try and fool Italian ground gunners by using Italian AF camo on the nose and leading edges of the wings so it might look like an Italian fighter coming in, at least long enough for the Hurri's to get the job done.

images are scanned from a couple different books and show a 3 Squadron Hurri I on top and two 208 Squadron Hurri Is below it.

I'll ask DsrtRat to have a look, his uncle Gp Capt Houle flew for 213 Sqn.

thanks replicant much appreciated......ive seen the camo a few times but have been unable to get accurate information, i saw 1 peice of information but the plane was marked as AK:G 615 Sqn ?? which dont match up as AK:G is 213 Sqn

I don't have much info on the camo. I have seen several different paintschemes on 213's birds. red spinners, white, 2 tone brown, brown and green, spaghetti etc...

I do know these planes were generally clapped out European fighters and from what my uuncle tells me, supplies in the desert were scarce including paint. That may explain why some planes were very different.

I agree with the above posting about confusing the Italians and I heard it made it tougher to aim at with this camo. All hearsay as I wasn't there (darn).

The AK code was used by 213 Sqn between 1940 and 1950.

The only other aircraft to use the AK code was 1657 Heavy Conversion Unit flying Short Stirling bombers.  

The only other assumption is that a Wing Commander or Group Captain had an aircraft pooled from 615 Sqn with his initials?
