Any AHers live in/near Munich? I'm over there in April for a few days but been provisionally offered a job there from October onwards (for 3 years).
Just have a few questions if anyone from around there!?
Thanks
Regards

Nexx - I stayed at the house of a WBer near Munich, about 5 years ago. I know, that probably doesn't help you much!
The "Mittler Ring" (Munich's equivalent of the M25) should be complete by now...
Here's what Ernst said to me about driving down from Frankfurt: "Caution - the mirror will be your best friend when driving on the A3. Very high speed sometimes." Boy, was THAT an understatement! I was doing 120-140mph, and still had Merc coupés coming up behind with the left indicator on - German for "excuse me, please"... Some of them were doing 150+. I eased back when my oil temperature reached 112°!
Have fun - try to visit Romantichestrasse, and Füssen - home to the Schloss Neuschwanstein (New swan stone castle).
-
It'll actually be in Unterhaching.
Hopefully I won't need a car since public transport is bound to be 100 times better than that in the UK! Good thing is the money is tax free! :)
-
Nexx,
When you going to be there? I am arriving in Munich on the morning of March 27th for the huge construction show that happens every three years. I leave on either April 1st or 2nd. I haven't seen the itenerary yet but we do have to head home. :(

Ah, I'm flying into Munich on the 5th April and and returning to the UK on the 6th April! I was supposed to be there for the week commencing 29th March but all the accommodation was already booked up; it explains why because of the construction show! doh! :) Oh well, I'm there for a second interview to clarify a move in October.

Does Holland count too?

Cheers Freeze, that's much appreciated! :)
When/if I finally get over there in October we'll have to find out how many other AHers live around there. I know a few about 4 hours from Munich (by car) so.... :)
BTW, I understand that there is a Messerschmitt museum near to Munich?
-
Just got back from a year in Germany. I was in Hamburg, but spent a lot of weekends visiting every little town we could find.
There is a great museum in Munchen, the Deutches Museum.
But plan on taking at least 2-3 days to see the whole thing. They got some great things in the aviation section, including a real V-2, an ME 163, ME 262's, Ju 52, quite a few very nice displays.
Also, go see Nymphenburg palace, Lustheim and Schleisheim. IIRC, the Schleisheim museum, you can buy a double ticket to also go see the aviation museum outside of town.
Was going to insert a pic, but not sure if I can. Do I have to have it hosted before I can link to it? This doesn't allow for uploads.
Cheers,
Spitter

:rofl
I almost fell from my chair when reading this (public transport). I'm not so sure now why, because of you optimism or because of the bad luck the british ppl must have :p
But seriously, it depends from where you want to go to where. This is still true in Munich althogh the public transportation in the city-close areas is quite good there compared to many other towns in germany. I guess you'll find out :)
I dont live near munich but my brother does and I visist him every now and then so I've been there a few times. Its a great place, many places to see, things to do. If youre there, go to the "Deutsches Museum". If you can lend a car maybe as well to the "Flugwerft Oberschleißheim" just outside of Munich. You'll see a lot of interesting planes and tons of other interesting stuff there. Me 262, 163, 109, these guided rockets from WW2 (X4?) and stuff.Really cool.
If you like beer, thats the place to be in the world :D Visit some "Biergarten" if you can.
Well, anyway, I prolly wont be able to answer special questions, sorry, but try if you like :)

Hey, Replicant!
I live just outside Munich (one town west), but close enough such that when I tell people where I live, I say "Munich".
Its a great place. I've been here for 5 years and I still love it. There is also another AH pilot here in Germering-Unterpfaffenhofen, but we have yet to get together.
I'm also an expat (long story, but British citizenship, raised in US).
Are you going to be working at Max Planck or ESO, by chance? I work at the German Space Operations Center in Oberpfaffenhofen, a little further west from where I live. I know Unterhaching has all sorts of high tech stuff, too.
If you need any help, advice, etc. please let me know. SnoGoose@web.de

Thanks again, I'll be contacting some of you shortly! :)
I think it's safe to say that the job is at the NATO Eurofighter Tornado Management Agency.

Well, public transport in England is non-existant unless you live right in the middle of a city! As for Munich, there's a S-bahn to where I would be working so it's well linked.
I'd definitely be interested in visiting some of the places you mentioned! I've seen all of those aircraft but I'd definitely want to see more examples. BTW, RAF Musuem Cosford has a huge collection of German guided rockets too.
Biergarten? Everyone at work has told me about this place! :) Doesn't it hold something like 12,000 people? :)

Biergarten is a class of places, of which there are about 2 per block in Munich and they all seat a bunch of people.

I am coming over on March 27th for the Bauma 2004 (http://www.munichtradefairs.com/Bauma/default.htm) but only get a couple of days before the show for some sightseeing. Fortunately the company I work for is headquartered in Germany and our VP of North America will have his BMW wagon there for driving us around to places. I would like to head out to the aircraft museum there once we get settled into our hotels.

What sort of equipment is your company interested in?

I am actually working for a few days during the show there. The company I work for here (Esser Twin Pipes, LLC) is owned by a German company (Esser Werke GmBh) and we sell pipes to company's who operate concrete pump trucks. We also sell pipes to the manufacturers of the trucks as well (Schwing, Putzmeister and Cifa are the major world wide companies.); we also sell to other smaller manufacturers worldwide as well.
I handle North America for the US side or our organization and that includes the US pump manufacturers as well as large diameter (over 5" inside diameter) pipe for mining, power plants, etc. During the time I will be there several of my customers will be over for the show courtesy of Schwing America, Putzmeister USA and Cifa USA and those guys will be coming by the Esser Werke tent at the show as well and someone who speaks English and can understand them needs to be there.

I'd normally jump right in and start making arrangments to meet up with you guys, but I just had an operation on my back and I don't know how long it will be until I'm back in shape.
The Docs say 6-8 weeks, although I feel better already. I should be in good shape by the end of the month.
Drop me a line a couple of weeks before y'all come over and maybe we can meet up.
Biergarten time usually gets going around April-May, so your timing is impeccable :)
My list of the best sights to see:
Deutsches Museum
Flugwerft Unterschleissheim (LW Airfield, with aircraft)
Zeppelin Museum Friedrichshafen (about a 2 hour drive, but worth it)
Pinakothek (Art, if you're into it)
Downtown shopping area (go on a weekday if possible, Sat. is crowded, closed Sun.)
Kloster Andechs (Monestary with good beer and food)
Schloss Neuschwanstein (castle - 1-1/2 hour drive)
Schloss Nymphenburg (castle in town)
Ammersee, Starnbergersee (2 big beautiful lakes 1/2 hour away)
Zugspitze (highest mountain in Germany 1 hour drive or train)
I hope I'm in shape to meet up with you by then.
-
Hey Snogoose! Long time, no see!

Hiya, Dowding
I still play, but mostly scenarios, maybe 1 night/week MA. Right now, though, sitting time is limited (lumbar prolapsed disk), so I've not been on for a while.
Good to hear from you.

Oh No... Nexx is coming on the continent ;)
(any chance of you passing through Belgium or Luxemburg?)

Sorry to hear about the back agosling. Hope all is better in a few weeks for you. BTW how far outside of Munich (Munchen) is the Flugwerft Unterschleissheim airfield you mentioned?
I have most of the day on Saturday March 27th and all day on Sunday March 28th to be a tourist before I have to work for 3 days. I want to get in a few good places like the castle and don't mind renting a car for the day to head out to places like the Ammersee, Starnbergersee area as well. Those are areas I have seen pictures of and would like to see in person.
I have heard that the Dachau isn't far away either; that is one place I would like to see as well because of the historical impact that a place like that has.
-
I think Dachau is very easy to reach from the centre of Munich, much closer to the centre than the airport.
Map below shows S-bahn routes (crap map!)

I haven't worked up the courage to go to Dachau yet, but its on my list. Unterschleissheim is very close, on the way, in fact to the airport from downtown, about 1/2 way.
Kloster Andechs is well combined with a trip to the lakes. It sits right in between them.
One interesting thing is Unterschleissheim's history. It was one of the major airfields used to jump start the LW pre-war under the conditions of the treaty of Versailles, when they were forbidden from training armed forces (glider clubs, civil transport pilots, etc.) There are some pictures there with some famous names you will recognise (I think Udet and Galland, but might be wrong). There are also some nice static displays. Not so much WWiI, but interesting aircraft. There is a wild looking Dornier VTOL jet and flying boat among others.
For better maps, I recommendwww.map24.de (http://www.map24.de). It has a good search mechanism and phenomenal pan, zoom, etc.

That sounds wonderful. I could combine that with a visit to some friends I have in Frankfurt.

Let me know when you intend on coming over Beetle! :) I should be able to put you up when I get the spare bedroom furnished (should be end of January/early February). Alternatively I can get a discounted hotel room in the Holiday Inn.

If your ever in the Frankfurt area, let me know.

Most cars that could go faster than 150 by hp are limited to 150 mph with very rare exceptions (e.g. porsche or modified versions of other brands). Are you sure you were doing 120-140 mph? If you rented a german one the speedo shows km/h, and your speed would have been around 90 mph. which is close to the recommended speed - something for grannies. What you have seen as going really fast would have showed 200-250 on a km/h speedo, e.g. twice as your speed ;)

Come on ccvi, I'm not that stupid. I was driving my own car - a Golf VR6, whose official top speed was 139mph. I once checked its speedo using GPS, and at 70mph it was accurate to within the thickness of the needle.
I think 25 years driving experience, I would know the difference between 90mph and 140mph.
-
Hehe autobahns.
In my German days, my usual ride was an old Patrol Jeep with totally max 70 mph, and to add insult to injury, I was usually tossing around with a horse trailer. Sometimes beef cattle on board.
One fine day I got a reasonably new little Golf to play with. I got it to 110 mph, still those bloody Ferrari's kept whooshing by as if I was standing still!
Anyway, Replicant, Munchen is an extremely nice town,I really loved it there.
Be sure not to miss Deutches Museum as mentioned somewhere before, it's really great, and the aviation section is a must-do.
Also, since the Zeppelin stuff is in Friedrichshafen, well if it's the one at Bodensee, that is a most wonderful place. Beautiful landscape.
If you are looking for some old remnants of WW2, try this:

Best of luck
Angus
P.S. You get used to the Wessbier after a while, and I wholeheartedly recommend German Rindersalami to go with it.

Hello again
Anyone else in the Münich area? Have spoken to a few people and how does a small get-together sound in, say, a couple of weeks time?
