Title: I find it interesting...
Post by: VWE on March 04, 2004, 11:57:41 AM
This morning while flying dawn patrol a newbie was on channel 1 typing in caps and asking the world questions. I responded with the usual alt-f3, hit enter 3 times answers and I get a message from the sys admin to knock it off. Sure would be nice to see the sys admin on during prime time policing all the potty mouths... or doing something useful like trying to fix the vox bug.

sometimes people's vox just stops working mid game, and there's no real way to tell except that people quit answering you

Someone will 'key up' and their name will stay in the top right corner and your game volume goes to almost nill. The only way to clear it is to log out and come back in... not an easy task when in the middle of a run.

Wow, and all this time I thought it was just my system that was doing that.  Haven't had an issue with it in the last couple of months, though.  Then again, I haven't been flying as much the last couple of months so I guess statistically there's been less chance for it to happen.

Yeah, it was the last part refering to the 'tard stuff... just a little incredulous about the swing of the pendelum for what gets your hand slapped, that's all. I guess I'll just have to stick to cussing on channel 1 which is of course tolerated.

Course you could always just say eff it all, focus on doing your homework and get good grades!

I dont get why people find newbies to be so anoying or why others feel the need to make it their job in the game to come up with answers like "alt f4"...

Some n00bs know better, others dont... Thats not the point. The point is, or I guess more so the question is why cant people just help rather than give out smart alick answers that boot them out of the game?

Sure having fun is one thing. But what enjoyment can one get out of watching someone get booted out of the game. Maybe Im just too nice when it comes to helping new guys... I like to take new guys into my squad. Not day after day but when the chance arises and they are willing and able to learn, I help them. Its most rewarding when you see them land a bagfull of kills and they thank you for the help.

I've been helped by many in the game. I feel that its only fair to give it back...

Edit: Oh yeah I am glad the mod PM'd you... Funny how you didnt like being told that in private... How do you think the n00b felt being told to alt f4 out of the game on ch1...? Taste the meds baby... He who giveth will recieveth:aok

Post by: VWE on March 04, 2004, 03:26:36 PM
I've helped out many, and a squad is a great place to do so... we even have a great training area... but channel 1 in the MA is not the place to 'learn' AH nor to teach it.

I think I'm going to start flying the Spitfire IX more and pretend to be a new guy.  New guys have all the fun!

I applaud people that want to help new people get started in this game.  It has a learning curve, and new people can get quite frustrated.  It benefits everyone when a new person wants to get interested in this game.

The Main Arena is a tough place for a new person to learn, but if they are willing to ask for help, they should get it.  Sometimes the help comes in the form of politely asking if they have checked the Training Arena for a trainer.
Other times, there may be a trainer in the MA which should help them.

No one should be made to feel inadequate just becase they are new.  Telling someone to alt-f4 is rude.  If you do not have the time to help them, then just let them be.  They are better off repeating a question on channel one than being told to alt-f4.

I never told 'em to alt-f4 I actually typed alt-f3... then the rest of the country corrected me.

I typed "climb to 10k, hit enter 3 times then 'O' fast..."

HAHAHHA.   That's so funny and clever!  Man, you must be thrilled with yourself for playing such an amusing trick on a newbie.  Hahaha.  Oh, your wittyness just kills me.  Man, I wish I was half as cool as you so I coulda come up with something so inventive.

Ohhhh, you funny guys.   Your cleverness & maturity never ceases to impress me.  Even after years of flying online, every time I see this stuff I think, "Hey, there goes one wild and crazy guy."

A simeple question requires a simple but straight answer. There is no need for BS "alt f4" remarks.

atta boy... This makes it much better:rolleyes:

I dont know where you learned it all but I did a huge part of my learning in the MA... I think I may have spent a total of 10 minutes in the TA on a single occasion just because it was packed and I wanted to see what was going on...

The MA is in my opinion the best place to learn next to the DA but this depends on what you want to learn. I still dont see why some people including you feel the need to toss out lame remarks to new ppl. Is it because you want to look cool and show everyone how whitty you are? Its just lame... End of discusion.

In my opinion, if someone has the guts to ask for help, they should get it. But thats just me.

I heard about AH from a friend and flew with his squad when online to learn what I could not learn offline. I can also not only read but comprehend so all that is available on the web site was more than enough. RTFM is what I'd like to type to the picture book people whom start this game. But I'd surely get banned for using such harsh language online... :p

the best fix for that would be to make your plane explode each time your vox goes out.  make it happen, Skuzzy.  :)

Hah!! that's nothing - had someone on last night complaining endlessly about not getting check six's how the team was terrible, not to expect anything from him - told him to stop whining and .......... was told I was a REPUBLICAN!!!

am still trying to get over it......

On the bright side it is interesting to note that that calling someone a Republican has now overtaken accusations of being gay....

bah.. if someone doesn't know what alt-f4 does, they shouldn't be on the 'net. it an age's old rite of passing. it should only take *one* time. if it doesn't, then darwin weeps.

personally i save the alt-f4 for the ones looking for cheat codes and stuff.  ;)

Hehe, I think I was there when that happened! Although I've not played for 2-3 evenings. Are you sure it was last night?

Skuzz, I'm sure many of us would like to help the noobs, but there is one change that needs to be made. That is when a noob asks if he can join your plane. Almost always when this happens, it's mid engagement. I have to fumble for the mouse to hit the DECLINE button when that window pops up, blocking my view, and at best miss a shot and lose out, or at worst get killed. It's a lose-lose situation. The guy in flight has had his flight ruined, and the noob feels snubbed. I also feel, with the typical dork mentality which is becoming more prevalent as time passes, that some guys might be doing it just for a laugh - to ruin your fight at the most opportune moment. There needs to be a global command which allows people to say NO to flight joining from the start.

if you've RTFM, you'd know there is one, sorta.

/.showjoin - it sends the request to buffer instead of popup.

Man, it doesnt seem like he was doing this in prime time.... and if its early morning, maybe nobody was in the TA, to awser his newb questions.. Maybe he was from a country where 5am-8am EST his his prime time. So getting anwsers in the TA is hard to do. This game has a steep learning curve and at one time we were all "NEWBS" lighten up.

Sad to see the fun slowly seeping out of the game. I repeat game cuz thats what it is. Political correctness is at an all time high, meanwhile the right to free speech runs rampant on ch.1 (if u think sexually explicit talk and cursing is free speech). However the foulth mouths are careful to use and extra F or S in their curseword, as not to get muted. But GOD FORBID you play a harmless joke on a newb! Alt f4 is a right of passage for newbs, and a good laugh as well. Doesnt mean we dont like them or dont want them here. However the hitech wanna be's come on ch.1 and say I filmed that!!!I got a screen shot of this!!!!Your being reported!!! BLAH BLAH BLAH.....Did you get a screenshot of succubus saying Pu**y every 3 minutes?OR baba tellin everyone to F**k off everyday?I find this game starting to be an eery reflection of the state of our society today. AAAAAhhhh I feel better. Well now that Im off the soapbox, I love aces high and have a great time flying it.

I tend to answer noob questions a lot, but I have NO @#%#$% tolerance for any lazy puke who downloads the game and immediately starts taking over channel 1 asking stupid questions that even a BRIEF perusal of manual would answer (how i start engine...how i lower gear...where is everybody, how do i arm sidewinders... WHY do you people keep shooting me? LET METAKE OFF YOU #@$%)....and so on. I  played with this game for a couple weeks offline before I ever started my 2 week thing

I don't like answering noob ?'s in the MA... I'm usually trying to find/win a fight.  lately I've been spending some time each night in the TA.  No, I'm not a trainer... but even a rookie like me can answer SOME questions.

anecodote:  My first night in the TA a guy named EMI is in a spit9 about 2k over my spit V and says on range vox "You're dead Steve", and proceeds to dive on me.  I revved him and spent the next 5 mins spraying 303's into his 6 as he tried to shake me..... made it all worth while.  :D

when I started, I DLd the game, proceded strait to the MA (thats the only place that had more than 5 pilots). Where I was promptly handed my arse while barely keeping my plane in the air. A mere 2 sorties like this & I soon realized-

I NEEDED TO LEARN TO FLY BEFORE ENTERING THE KILLING ARENA!

Many newbies do not have the same "respect" for the game & its established players.

I spent about 2 months in the TRAINING ARENA. what I did there was TRAIN. Asked questions, had dogfights-with other NEWBIES. Learned controls- ETC.

I often help people that seem to have done a lil homework, but the idiot that shows up askin a verage of "whats the best plane?" "how do I take off?" or "whats the fastest plane?" deserves no respect as they dont have any for the game (IMO).
