Chuck Berry should be near the top. He may have been surpased, but he freakin invented rock-n-roll guitar.
-
Brian May just at 39?
-
Why are Kurt Cobain, Jack White and Johnny Ramone even on that list?

Angus almost did not make the list?
Yeah right. I have seen him play. I think this list is nonsense.

Yea and I can describe relativity with some success. But Einstein is still a genius for pulling that idea out of thin air.
If you tried to give rock and roll another name,
you might call it 'Chuck Berry'.
- John Lennon
All of Chuck's children are out there playing
his licks.
- Bob Seger
There's only one true king of rock 'n' roll.
His name is Chuck Berry.
- Stevie Wonder

I am speaking from a technical point of view not artistic.
Yes Chuck was a pioneer he came first.
But that does not make him a better guitarist.
As far as i know SRV is the only one who could play rhythm and lead guitar at the same time!
untill Stevie hit the scene nobody had ever heard of such a thing.
In fact some even utterd those horrible words (hey this dude does Hendrix better than Hendrix)

Here's My Top 5...
1:Jimi Hendrix
2:Pete Townsend
3:Chuck Berry
4:SRV
5:Scotty Moore
-
and where is Lindsay Buckingham of Fleetwood Mac?
-
As a certified ex-hippie i like Joni Mitchell as much as anyone with an ounce of heart, but she doesn't belong on this list.
Jimmy Page live is the WORST. Terrible! He needs studio magic. I vote Page as the most over rated player on the list.

Nah,that award goes to Mr Clapton(W honourable mention to Jerry Garcia)...Hendrix could be sloppy live too..Listen to the first 2/3 of his Woodstock gig(or isle of Wight).
-
have to disagree Sir... Clapton is far better than page.
Page's greatness was in the stuidio.. alternate tunings, arrangements, acoustic stuff...
the electric stuff was orignial but easy to emulate.
('cept that pick-drag thing is tough for me)
So many better guitar players... I was glad to Jeff Beck on the list though...
-
Yeah you know the list has to be whacked when there is no Alvin Lee.
-
Where's Al Dimeola? He's better than half the people on that list. Curt Cobain and the White Strypes guitarist? Barfasorus Rex!
:(

Al Dimeola's "Elegant Gypsy" is one of my favorites. Was wondering when Dimeola would be mentioned.

Satriani would be perhaps no.1, but currently he isnt on the list at all, serious mistake.
And if that list would be based on the guitar playing skills, 80% of the people on the list would be in somewhere beyond rank 500. You find the best guitar players from flamenco and classical, but then the list would fill with unknown names, so this is more like famous rock guitarist in random order.

Don't get out much do ya? :-)
Robert Jonhson and about 50 other delta blues players. Chet Atkins, Doc Watson, and about 1000 other country/bluegrass pickers.
And, oh yea, just about every classical guitarist ever born.
-
and jazz players.. some of those guys are monsters.
Chet is da'man.. 3 things at once-incredible.
you nailed it myelo
hell, some of the local talent blows away some of the guys on that list.

Actually, Hendrix should be on his own list because no one on the list below him is even in the same galaxy with him. Even today, 30+ years after his death, there's no on that even comes close to him.

LOL SRV was light years ahead of johnson.
now chet atkins I will give ya that one he is ONE great player.
But SRV had a created a style and made the blues popular again.

Di Meola live performance is so good that he could be aswell playing playback. ;)
I love the Paco&John&Meola Live Mediterranean Sundance. Its just unbelievable. They dont need no picks, bends or FX, just pure strings. You can even find that tabulature from Mysongbook.com, if somebody plays guitar _very_ well in here, insane difficulty guaranteed.
-
I got to see Al Dimeola last year with another flamenco guitarist from Cuba who's name escapes me at the moment. They each did their own sets and then got together and it was great.
You're right Tuomio, guys like Dimeola don't need to bend or use electronics. He's so quick and precise it's unbelievable. Quite the show live.
:aok :aok
-
LOL SRV was light years ahead of johnson.
but not Eric Johnson :aok
I saw Al Dimeola, Chick Correa (sp), Stanley Clark, and Lenny White in a 'return to return for forever thingie..'
shook their hands, was awestruck by the talent...
they ROCKED
-
Yeah Eric Johnson.
I think there styles were very different.
I think SRV was more traditional blues.
More Of what he idolised Albert King and the such.
Noy I do Like Erick Johnson and he Is a master guitarist no doubt.
But now a blues man like SRV:aok

Yeah these cats play fast but they lack the soul of SRV.
But then again they aint playing the blues are they.
Have you ever heard robin trower or Alvin Lee?
Those cats were smokin guitar strings long before these dudes were ever born.
-
i know who they are!!! they are not as fast
besides shown lane isnot like that. he doseb't play rock, its like jazz, blues, rock, and pop. its his own style.
buy the powers of ten album by shawn lane. his music is amazing
-
Yeah I heard some stuff on his web site.
I guess im just too old fer it not my style.
But thats the great thing about music is there is always something there for everybody.
I like more classic rock and blues.
Some country NO rap.

seriously, buy every shawn lane album. He is so unique and different that that alone is reason enough to like his music!! powers of ten!!
I have recordings of his jam sessions with famous player like
johnson and many more
sadly, shawn lane, a musical genious, passed away at age 45 from complications with his lungs from smoking

to some extent yes, but in these cases they are playing so fast that the speed in which they must think about what they are playing and the chords that they are playing over is increadible.
espessially shawn lane. There are so many neat modes in his playing
you do know what a mode is right? its a music term
-

that is all just penatonics
its not like he is using any modes in that. its fast but so what!! the penatonic scales have such limits and modes allow much more variety in what notes you can play. you all know what modes are right? the music term?
-
these are the name of the 7 modes
Ionian
Dorian
Phrygian
Lydian
Mixolydian
Aeolian
Locrian
there are thousands of modes but these are the standard 7
i will let you figure out what they are on your own becuase they are very complicated
If you don't know what these are then you can't really say who the best guitar player is now can you? :D
just something i wanted to point out
-
Rap Is short for CRAP
I love it! could be sig material.
and on the modes... pentatonic scales are simplified from, but based on, the very scales you speak of :)
minors yes, but the same basis.
One can play with great complexity in just about any key or mode but the real talent, IMO, is in connecting and letting flow.. the placement of notes and silence etc.. not mere 'ripping'.
Ripping with not purpose is like j**king off

actually i totally agree with above newbie's point.
"music" critics are just jazz band pianists from HS that couldnt cut it IRL anywhere else. some of them play at the food courts in malls though... to "keep their cred up" i guess.
as far as "pleasing to the ear" goes sorry... hendrix did ALOT of dissonant sounding stuff. innovative and unique but not always pleasing sonically.
also pleasing to hear is VERY subjective. and example would be "river of deciet by mad season" very beautiful song IMHO... my step dad hated it. said the feedback and droneing sounds made it horrible. his opinion. thats what makes lists like this usless.
to rate solely on techicnal performance and originality would leave out players that have more "feeling" than others. also it could only be made by other guitar players. then noon-players would feel left out.
done only by plesaurable to listen too and you get a list somewhat like this one, that outrages guitarists.
noone can ever be totally happy.
words to live by LOL!

My miscommunication 2stony, I ment "WFT" as Were the F***. I used to take classical guitar, can still play a little "Asterius". ;)
-
Well BB King said of SRV playing the blues is like being born black twice.
But no one told Stevie and we didn't mind.
Man the blues are unlike any other music form.
You must FEEL the blues to play the blues.
And to be able to convey that thru his guitar the way he did I find amazing.
And all of this from a cat that could not read music.
WOW how in the world did he remember all those songs.
-
The ancient Greeks (the guys who build the Acropolis and invented coined money) were among the first who introduced musical scales. They named their 8-notes-within-an-octave scales after their biggest tribes - Dorian, Phrygrian, Lydian and Mixolydian. The Dorian scale was descending from E, the Phrygrian from D and so on. Later the musicians of the Christian Church adopted the system to their needs - and changed nearly everything reversing the order, changing the starting note and now calling it mode insead of scale. Out of names they also introduced some new, so that for example the good (=Greek) old Lydian scale became the brand new Ionian mode. That's history...

yes i know but i guess that in some stlyles penotinics sound ok and they are very useful but there are is so much more you can do with modes!! i love writing and jaming in my favorite mode, lydian. it has a 'dream-like' sound. does anybody know what im talking about?
What you can do with modes, you can't always do with penatonic
BUT BUT BUT BUT I AGREE that talent is not always speed but really how well someone can express themselves through music how well the music flows, and how musical it is. The thing is i am used to listening to, being taught to listen to, and to learn from musicians who write with more advanced thoery like the modes. A lot of these things people who are not musicians would catch so i am sorry if i seem opiniated. What i can't stand is 'wanna-b' players like the white stripes. I mean come on, he can't sing, and he can't play. If he can get a record deal why can't i?
I am taking guitar lessons and i have been taken for 5 year, which i know is not long, but i want to become a serious musician and i am taking it seiously. I really dont 'dis-like' any guitarest because all of them offer new ideas that i can use to benifit my abilities.
