Title: The last airplane I finished...
Post by: Bodhi on March 05, 2004, 04:52:59 PM
The following are some pics of an SNJ-5 I rebuilt and finished last October.  It was not a 100% restoration, just a flyer.  Still it was fun, and we will do a 100% restoration back to stock '43 when it was issued, in a few years.  The owner just wanted to log some massive stick time and wanted it to be safe, efficient, and painted authentically.  ANyways,  enjoy.

Looks nice.

You did not retrofit any R2800 jugs onto the motor right? I have a book on the R2800 and the auther stated some of the racers flying Texans(that is a texan right) where using R2800 jugs and it was drying up the supply for real R2800s!

Never heard of that.... No, it is a Texan variant, (SNJ-5) but is stock Navy and even has the hook mounting structure inside.  The engine is an R-1340, and I can not imagine fitting an R2800 jug onto that core.  I think what you are talking about is a "Super 6" which if memory serves me, they clip 5 foot of wing, remove the 1340, place a Curtis 1820 on it and blaze a trail through the sky.  The only alternative version I have seen of the "super 6" is one that had the 1830 on it, which looked really weird with a dual row radial on it... the cowling just looked "not right"  It was fast though!

:D

I can look it up in the book I have on the R2800 its the same guy that did the allies piston engine book and post back if you are interested.

This is all memeory so I very well may be wrong!

The only thing I am thinking is that the 1340 core will not accept a 2800 cylinder... so, you do one of two things... remake the core (expensive) or you modify the 1340 core (risky) to accept 2800 jugs....  That done, u will need to replace the crankshaft, and piston rods, as the tourques and force will be different, not to mention the piston throw.  I think you are think of the 1820 mod, but would be interested to see what you can find out if you would look it up.

without the aquisition cost on that bird MT, I put about $45000 into it.  When we do the 100% restoration, I am figuring around $100k.

Mr. Black, I do not dislike you, I disagree and am disgusted with your statements of past.

That said, I appreciate your compliment and will have a beer with you when you are next in the springs area.

Now everyone, group hug.

Well the Graham White books say they are using modified R2800 cylinders in the R2000 and 1340, but he does not go into much detail. I know I read more then that. Maybe in a magazine. I will go look.

Aircraft Cylinder and Turbine a short while ago announced they were selling what they called "The R1340 Super 600".  It mated R2800 cylinders on a 1340 case and allowed unlimited full power running at a full 600 horses.

BTW Bohdi, I just picked up a T-6G rebuild project, not sure if I will do it, or sell the project for some profit.

Dago!
That was it, I think maybe it was an artical in air classics.

I probably read the article too, I get Air Classics from a friend who gets 6 free each month (plus another magazine), but I also had read about them on the ATC website when I was looking at 1340 rebuilders.

The Super 600 had no max continous power setting, basically you can go full throttle all the time.  I am not sure what the status of that engine program is, but I found it interesting.

Watch for intergranular on the lower lip of the spars... I have rebuilt 3 Texans from SA, and all had verying degrees of it.  One was so bad, we ended up having to rebuild both the wings and centersection spars.  If you need any other advice on it, feel free to give us a call at work 719-550-3700.

Corrosion limited to wing attach angles/flanges on center section and wings.  Light to moderate exfol.

If I get a chance, I'll post a pic or two when I get back out to it, its stored in a hangar about 20 mins away.  Been stored wings off 20 years, some restoration done already.

Got a good price on it, includes about everything except engine (I'll prob go with Covington), prop is zero time with tag, aft fuse almost completely reskinned, not much left there.  Gear fresh, many internal parts done, a lot of extra parts (6 wingtips, etc).

more later,

Dago,

I feel it would really behoove you to pull the bottom access skin, and really look in those wings.  I have lost two friends over the years to corroded wings, and I am fanatical about it as far as the 6 goes.  Ohhh, want to part with a set of tips?  I have a massive inventory of T-6 parts, so if you need something, maybe we can trade.

I will be checking it over completely when the weather is better.  Thanks for the tip, it's always good to know problem areas.
