Title: In need of a few ideas
Post by: SoulzofAW3 on March 06, 2004, 07:20:23 PM
I've been out of AH for a month now and I'm planning on coming back when AH2 comes out.  The problem is that as of now, my comp cant handle the graphics in AH2.  I was wondering if anybody had an idea on where I could find a good and cheap computer which is capable of running AH2 smoothly.  I already have a computer that's used for work, so I'll only need a second computer for gaming and not much else.  Any ideas on what I should be looking for and where would be greatly appreciated.

Alot depends on what you want in terms of "upgradability"....AH2 isnt really very demanding but you might run into issues with newer "box games". You can build a great AH2 rig for ~$ from scratch...or buy something for about the same money. There's another  thread on same thing here...to recap a barton core AMD 2600+ or better on an abit/azus or other board will run ~$130 on special somewhere...Fry's had an AMD 2200+ on an abit board for $70 last week. Add a decent case for ~$50 and fast 80Gig drive for ~$90 ( Igot a maxtor 7200 rpm with 8 meg read for $79 after rebate last week. You'll need 512 of PC2700 DDR (got PNY from comp usa for $40 after rebate last week) so ...so far

MB/CPU    $130
Case            50
Hard Drive   90
Memory        60
____________

subtotal     280

Now you can get a CD/RW for $40...CD for $30 or less. Now you need a Video card...Ti4600 will run AH just fine but if you want max pop you'll need a newer card...a GF FX 5900 or 9800 pro will run around $210 or so....

CD RW          40
Video card   210
_______________

                   $530 give or take

my system runs ah2 fine.  see signature below.  I've not priced all the components but the mobo now is much less expensive and the cpu price dropped as well.

looked at humble's #'s and they looked good.  $500 gets much.

Soulz,

Not long ago I built a few P4 based 2.8Ghz systems for the office for just over $750. These were all high end component machines with the exception of the video card which was a GeForce4 FX 440 card.
