I'm posting this from an old computer.
I noticed today, I had a wierd file on my desktop. It was labeled simply "~" (no quotes). I opened to file and saw it contained email addresses from my outlook program and othe cryptic information. I deleted the file with wiping and it completely crashed my system. I couldn't even get up in the safe mode. I did a non destructive system restore, but now I'm leary of taking any data files off the suspected computer. I use that computer mostly for gaming, but there is an excel worksheet I'd like to get off it before doing a destructive system restore.
1. Do you think it would be safe to transfer the worksheet via floppy disk?
2. Will a destructive system restore get rid of any trojans on the computer?

A squad mate has sent me an article on the mysterious file. It seems Outlook Express generates it - yet another bug. Many thanks to him for saving me tons of work.

it's a copy of Outlooks Express's adress book that drops onto your desktop - irritating but harmless
