Title: A couple of B-17 Skins!
Post by: Thunder on March 12, 2004, 02:10:43 PM
This is a skin of a B-17G of the 8th USAAF/1st Bomb Wing/447th BGH/709th BS "A Bit O' Lace"

In flight Photo of A Bit O' Lace (http://mysite.verizon.net/sjthornton/backside.jpg)

Due to current game peramiters a box K can't be placed on the tail so a diamond K was inserted. The Diomond K goes to the wing automatically, and the V on wing mirrors. Also the Nose Art can't be put on the nose because it would interfear with the squadron logo. So it is as accurate as I can make it for now. Oh the Tail was shot up in WWII and the rudder was replaced with a Olive one and elevators from a silver one. I modeled thiis one with the original rudder elevator the way it was before it was hit.

This is a skin of a B-17G of the 8th USAAF/1st Bomb Wing/457th BGH/748th BS "Thy Will Be Done"

thunder those skins rule

is it possible to get the olive drab rudder and silver elevators on a bit o lace?

also the engine nacels anti glare panels should be ultra faded olive drab not black.
same as the nose anti glare panel

also the vents on the edged of the wingtips on the b17s shouldnt have exhaust stains.

Very very nice! But I still think our skinns are abit to.....clean, would be nice to see some exhaust smoke added on the wings or something like that.

Fester,

You got it!... I will work on it and repost so we can get it right.
I submitted the other three but thought I would work on "A Bit O' Lace" before I sent it to HiTech. I'll try and have something for you to look at yet this afternoon.

cool thunder :)

on second look the engine anti glare panels should be a little bit darker than the nose panel.

the way actual olive drab paint fades is the top parts get sun bleached very fast while the side areas hold their color a bit longer.

Fester,

I reworked the tail for you and will work on the anti glare panels next as well as the engine stains and removing the wingtips stains. I put in the Lady on the side for grins!

lol thunder that looks awsome!

its getting really close to the real one even with the hardwired differences :)

a tip for getting really dull faded paint like on the anti glare panels is to adjust the saturation in the photoshop image menu of the area desaturate it to your liking to get that great sun bleached look :)

the dodge tool does the same effect but the desaturation is more uniform on the highlighted area or layer

Awesome skins Thunder!  Any interest in doing a Memphis Belle skin? I used to live a couple houses down from the left waistgunner for the Belle, it would really be neat to have it in AHII.   Mtnman

mtnman,

I may have spoke too soon. When I sarted getting the plates and historical information on the "Belle" I noticed it is NOT a model "G" and doesn't have a chin turret. Since it is not historically accurate I don't know if Pyro would except it. I will check with him before I do a lot of work on it. I will get back after I call HiTech Creations and get their take on that. Looks like it would be a fun project.

Very nice Thunder :)

Can't wait til the skinning rules are redone to allow noseart and other nifty things.

That is some outstanding work thunder it really shows what people are capable with a product like Aces High 2. The P-51's are just... ::speechless::

Take care bud..

I just talked to HiTech Creations and got some guidance on the making of the "Belle". Eventually there will probably be other B-17 Model that will be made. Obviously this is not a high priority right now due to thier current tasking. John felt that it would probably be wise to stick to only historically accurate modeling as far as the game will permit. I understand it to be sort of like this...

Example... Skins should be as historically accurate as possible and should only be made for models that match the ones that exist in the game. If there are anomolies that exist in the game that preclude the skin from being applied use your best judgement and work with HiTech creations to create it as faithfully as can be done. (ie the modeling on a B-17 only allows a diamond. This would means that only planes from the 1st Bomb Wing could be rendered and over half of the planes would be excluded because planes from the 2nd & 3rd BW (circles and squares could not be done) Look at the picture of A Bit O' Lace above in Festers post. I did the K on the tail (it should be a square, not a diamond) The game only allows a diamond there and also automatically puts it on the upper port wing surface. So some things happen that we can't do any thing about for now. Latter as the game progressees possibly they may address them or they they may simply decide it is not an issue. Also, wing surfaces both top and bottom mirror each other so what goes on one goes on the other. The same type of mirroring exsists on the side of the aircraft so care needs to be used when deciding what and what not to put on. Example I have a faithful rendition of the Nose art for "A Bit O'Lace" but (1) it would be in the place where the squadron logo goes (2) it would mirror to the other side and only half would show and the lettering would would be backwards. (So...... I left it off! :)  ) I could go on for hours and give numerous examples... So the rule I think I would follow is try and pick planes that you like that look the best under the current structures for now. Do your best and get guidance from HTC before you do a lot of extensive work if you want to see it in the game. But if your like me, I have as much fun making planes as flying them sometimes, so I just have fun! Fun is what its all about and why I guess I have still chosen to hang in after 14yrs. Mapping, Skins, Strat, yadda, yadda is what gives me diversions when I need a break from flying  :aok

I think I will but the "Memphis Belle" on hold for a while.

Totally understand Thunder. I've not tried to do any skins yet, not even sure I have the software/ability to do them, so was not aware of some of the limitations you mentioned.  I'd rather wait anyway, and see an accurate Belle when/if HTC releases the correct B17 model. Thanks for the consideration though. I may have to look into this whole skinning thing too. As an artist, and WWII airplane buff, it seems like something that would be right up my alley...  Mtnman

DRILL,

Salute Sir!

Roger I was ==th== in War Birds! I have been on online air sims since 1991. AirWarrior DOS, AirWarrior I & II, CK Beta, Warbirds, Aces High. But we flew in WB together.... Good to say hi!

I have been having fun doing skins lately. It seems that if you enjoy the online aircraft thing you can find all sorts of diversions to have fun!

Salute!
