Unfortunately Discrete expect the game producer to fork out hundreds of thousands for a license to convert from gmax formats to the game format. That being said it is possible to work around this and get gamx files into 3DS format, though you will probably be in breach of the license conditions.

In short gmax isn't a free solution: it transfers cost of licensing from the 3rd party content producers to the game producer itself.

hmm yeah im sure this one has already been considered and disgarded for those reasons. its also a very powerful editor probably more complex than what is needed for editing the 3d terrain tile objects

Gmax is exelent, but like Pei said, the producer of a game have to pay alot for it, it works for companies like Microsoft for their FS series and some other big companies (ID Software with Quake) etc.

If you want a good free editor (open source too) go download Blender (http://www.blender3d.com/). More than enough to edit such 3D objects. If you need to convert the files there are usually quite a few programs that can do that.

Fester take a look at AC3D (http://www.ac3d.org) its cheap (<$50) and works well with 3DS format items. I have been learning with it and using it to build an F-100 Hun for the Target: Hanoi mod to Targetware.

Here is a brief list of the supported 3D file formats:

Quote
Support for many 3D file formats including POV-Ray, VRML (1 and 2), RenderMan ,3D Studio 3DS, Lightwave, DXF, Alias triangle, Wavefront OBJ, Direct X, Milkshape, MD2, Quake 3 BSP, Quake MD2, Unreal Tournament t3d.

Honky,

I have no idea. My free time has been taking up with working on a "clipboard" style map for the mod along with learning AC3D for my F-100 Hun model. So I really haven't had a chance to play it since before Christmas. I have heard they are getting 30-50 depending on the time of the night. But the other mods that are up are getting close to the same number as well. Right now they have a Target: Flanders mod being built that I think is in open beta like TR and of course there is Target: Korea.
