Hi guys,
some of u know and some might not know, that i hvae Hepititus C, its effects left untreated is
cirossus of the liver(liver failure). it is the #1 silent killer in the US. most people dont know they
have, cause its symptoms are like many other illnesses. I am not sick from it or near liver failure. I did
how ever decide to try the treatment for it (only 40% chance of it working). well my 6months treatment
test was done last week. at this point the protacall says, if viral count is unchanged or not below a certain
level we must stop cause treatment isnt working. well my tests showed that my count went from millions
of virus to 10, yes 10 which means almost undetectable. and also means the treatment is working like it was hoped.
so now i go for the last 6 months to permenantly put the virus into remission.
i take peglated Interfuron(shot per week) and Ribavirun(4 pills aday).
Ive been very lucky with treatment(it working) and not having anything near
what the side effects could be.
lastly id like to say, i would like any of u who had blood transfusions before 1985 to be checked
specificly for Hep C, they had no screening for it or knew exactly what it was before then
so lots got into blood supply.
the gambit of Hep C is, u could never be ill from it and live fine, or u could end up with
liver failure/transplant. the transplant is why im going treatment route. to avoid the last resort.
Thanks
Mike Koon

Congrats whels..nasty virus that.
My Dad almsot died from it after travelling to the Far East a few years ago. He was in a coma for 2 days before he finally pulled through. Not sure which type he had...it wasn't the really deadly one, but he got a really bad case.

I am very happy for you whels

Yo, Whels! Pancake ^Skull^ here. Best of luck with the next 6 months. Had a blast at Sun-n-Fun with you years ago. Unfortunately, I don't have the vacation days available to do it during the week and I have volleyball commitments on the bookend weekends.
Glad to see you're on the mend.

Great news Whels.
FWIW, my Hep C story:
In 1990 I came down with Hep C, detected during a bout with sleeping sickness. I never felt the ill effects, nor have I ever done the treatment. They continued to monitor my liver enzymes over the years and eventually they were no longer able to detect the Hep C, and my liver is stable. Asked why it was gone, the doctor simply said "some people have better immune systems to combat this virus, and your's apparently has done the job well."
Shrugs.

Great news indeed!
(Whels, you aren't related to the KOONs of Blair Co. PA, are you?)

Congrats
I saw a documentary on Discovery about a brother donating half his liver to his brother to save his life. Quite the story.
Glad you are well

Good news indeed. I hope you recovery continues and this disease gives you no more trouble!
I had Hep A in 1976. It was no fun then and prevented me from continuing to be a blood donor.

Great to hear this Whels, my sister has HepC as well and is going thru the same treatment as you...hope her results are as good,

When I was working on the Ambulance I took a series of three vacinations to prevent hep-c but I could not build the anti-bodies.
So I had to move to dispatch as alot of our patients were aids patients.
Hope you got treatment in time bud it is an ugly thing.

Ive had is since the 70's.
At one point it was very high levels like yours so I took the treatment (made me sick every day for a year). The levels dropped to allmost nothing but they never died off. I have it but it is low level so the treatment worked out I guess. I have never been sick from it.
My doctor told me I shoulda had sleeping sickness but that only people with wimpy imune systems get that and that my imunne system was much too manly to ever get sleeping sickness or baldness.

S!
I found myself in a similar situation this week. I was diagnosed with a rare kidney disease called "IgA-Hephropathy". Thankfully the prognosis is pretty good, 30% change of kidney failure within 10 years if the disease starts to advance. I'm currently doing my military service and now on leave waiting for my discharge papers... Well at least I got to try the army for 2 1/2 months.

LAWCobra and others,
There is no vaccine for Hepatitus C! You may be confusing it with B or A where there are vaccines and a 3 shot regimen will give you a 10 year or so resistance. I am vaccinated against A&B because I travel a lot of the world.
