I started the thread regarding Spain and the Election as it's a significant event and of great interest. Shame the debate didn't remain civil and ended up being closed.
Thanks to those that did make constructive and interesting posts.
Cheers,

I found some of those statements an absolute disgrace...
Anyone who thought it a good idea to have a crack at the spanish for being weak willed obviously never saw the millions of spaniards who marched on the streets in defiance of tyranny.
I always stare in disbelief at the ones who loudly extol the virtues of defending freedom at any cost, are then usually the first to denounce anyone who would dare to use their freedoms that don't fit their own ideology .
Anyone who would lambaste the spaniards for using the democratic process to effect change should take a hard look at themsleves.

I would say something, but then I'd get blasted down for being whatever the new term of the day is, so I will say something.

Yup, I agree. Take all the potshots you want if you disagree, you aren't waving the flag you want if you do.

Certainly made me question my participation in both this BBS and AH as a game.

Yep.
Maybe it's time the O club was closed. That, and Ch. 1 are the two worst and most unacceptable facets of AH.

I was truly stunned by some of the comments on that thread, although as usual it was a minority of fools who didn't think matters through before making their views known that caused the problems.

If the locking of topics and suspension of posters were done in a consistant and objective manner things might be better. I stil wonder how a poster can cut&paste crap of one political leaning while the opposite viewpoint will get a quick slapdown. Or how posters who can be extremely vulgar or personal (a few examples; Grunherz, Yeager, Rude or BigBMAW) are not even on the probation list while others have been banished for the same or less.
And after typing this I wonder why the heck I'm here bothering to reply to some dimwad about lost rights after I've long closed my account......
bye!

Cuz a little sanity goes a long way Wes, on the Animal Farm board. ;)

I, personally, hope that the O Club remains open. We already have enough censorship problems.....
I don't care for Howard Stern's show... so i don't listen to it...
and if someone here is too offended by what they read that they can't bear it any longer....
please just stop reading and let us make up our own minds as well.....
-
I do want to add that abuses DO need to be singled out.
And I support the locking of threads that start going in that direction in an effort to keep it somewhat civil here.
Hmmm... maybe in a way that sounds hypocritical...

It's often said that the life blood of online enterprises is the community they foster.
Looking at this BBS; if it was a bar or social club; I wouldn't go near it.
Similarly I don't use vox. Not because I don't like the idea; but because I object to some foul mouthed teenager screaming obscenities accross my living room every time he didn't get the check 6 call he thinks he's owed.
Enforcing range vox and insisting on an HTML board instead of a configuarable NNTP newsgroup merely so the likes of Ripsnort can post from work are just two of HTC's more unfathomable descisions.
YMMV.

I agree that there are a few that like to act like a horses arse here but I DO think that the majority of the people here are first rate. I disagree with probably more than half of the viewpoints expressed on certain issues but I enjoy the conversations and hearing the viewpoints.
In any bar or social club you're gonna get some of this. IMO

Bigots and idiots should have a voice. How else will we know them? It is pretty obvious in threads like the one Gixer started, who has fallen from the evolutionary tree, and who is still climbing.
-
Well It Is the product of a sick mind to attack a country and its people after such a horrible event.

While I obvioulsly focused more on my hurt at the apparent reversal after the bombings to the point where it overrtode any sensibility for Spanish people's pain until people showed me just how mad they were, and so made some very hurtful comments for which I'm truly sorry.
I do find somthing distrubing in some statements here.
I have noticed this attitude from Europeans a lot that equates expressed disagreement with some form of intollerance, fascism or lacking in freedom.
And we see that again here. From many american viewpoints, especilly considering the CNN newscoverge we got here it seemed that that there was a deliberate reversal in the election from the bombings.
And all rash hurtful statements aside the point of what was said the other day was disagreement with that decision.
Not condemnation of spanish democracy. Not coondemantion of spanish peoples right to choose own leadership. Not condemnation of their freedoms.
Only a condemantion of their decision, a decision I thought was made in error and for the wrong reasons based on the info I had at time.
In other words, it was a disagreement.
And disagrement is not fascism, it is not censorship, it is not intollerance. In fact disagreement is the very essence of freedom...
And beacuse you dont like the disagreement you want to shut down the board...
And dont say its just because of the hurtful statements, please dont. Beacuse we all know some of you guys dish out insensitive hurtful stuff to americans all the time, yet you dont ask it to stop there.

Falling? more like a concerted effort to leap as far as possible.

Grun,
As hurt as you might have been about what had happened in Spain, spare a thought about the words (which i shall not utter here) you used and the effect those words would have had on Spaniards who post on these boards.
This is not a U.S. vs. Euro thing. It's just a question about expressing your condolences and showing some solidarity with a people who are grieving. It's common human decency.
You wouldn't have said the words you used at a funeral, so why use them here? Remember that there are real people reading what you say, and in a way, everyone who posts here is an ambassador for his country as well as for himself.
At least you were man enough to apologise, there was at least one twit who went on to try and justify himself and never did.

I did express my condolances the day it happend.
Let me explain how I felt hurt the day of the elections and how it lead to all this mess created by me.
All the info I saw on the day of the election from US news sources said that spanish voters made a massive turnaround in the polls because of the bombings. I fealt that if that was true then that the voters then disgraced their fellow dead citizens by giving in to the terrorists and doing as they wanted. That made me incredibly pissed off for 3 reasons as I saw it that day.
1) These people were just murdered by terrorists and a two days later people vote how terrorists wanted them to because of bombings. It struck me as shameful treatment of the dead by thair fellow citizens.
I never said a bad word about the victims, all my anger was directed at the survivors who I felt by the info I had that day had betrayed their dead neighbors.
2) As an American, I felt betreyed because the voters would because of the terrorists vote in a govt that would no longer be with our men and wome as allies at a time of war.
3) Adiitionally I saw many gleeful posts by the usual anti USA policy guys where they only saw this as a victory against the USA and did not consider it could possibly encourge more attacks and kill more people.
With the info I had thats what I saw and thats why I was hurt. I
Now I let that boil over in me over a few posts and my wording got really bad and absuve. Abusive to the point that it went past my own concern for spanish people would feel at the loss.
Thats the mistake I made and when I saw how people gut upset by it and how much they were hurt by what I said, I saw that I had made a mistake in going too far and notbeing mindful of other peoples pain and perspective on this. I realized that immediately and apologized right away. I ****ed up and hurt people.

You were all very nice on 911,just as everyone was on 311 in spain. Thanks.
However a bunch of the post 911 inuendo was hurtful..
All that USA 911 consipracy, Bush is evil, amereeka is imperialist, USA has other motives in afghanistan, USA is evil for iraq, it was a cruise missle in pentagon, bombs in WTC, usa is evil in persuing terrorsits, usa is evil and like nazis in imprisoning terrorists, bush is hitler us army is like SS etc.. All that was hurtful.
Maybe you dont think so, but a whole bunch of americans including me were and are hurt and offended by such comments.
Now well make mistakes, its part of life and learning, but damn at least dont deny them....

Who are these "you" your speaking of?
Its an awful big paint brush your painting with...
As for me ive always got stuck on the WMD issue... Thats all... Im truly sorry if you took offence when i stated that the war was sold on false grounds...

Its an imprecise term, yes. But we both know these boards are full of threads and posts saying all those things and worse. So the "you" applies to the authors of these posts...
-
Ya,
Everything works both ways... you give you recive... thats the way it always will be... to say that any side is MORE guilty of mudslinging than another is djust foolished as we all are biased...

Seems like a pretty strong and vibrant community to me. Both in the game and on the BBS. Not everyone is someone I'd pick as a friend but overall, this is a "class" group of people from which to choose friends. Those I've met in person have strongly reinforced this opinion of mine.
Looking at this BBS; if it was a bar or social club; I wouldn't go near it.

That is certainly your perogative. However, just because you would choose not to patronize such a club, that isn't any sort of justification for having it "shut down."
It's that "mouse-clicker free choice thing" yet again.
Enforcing range vox
I totally agree with you on this one and have discussed it to no avail with HT. What's the difference? There is no choice. Range channel can't be silenced. Now, give us the option of squelching range and there's no problem whatsoever, is there? The "mouse-clicker free choice thing" yet again.
an HTML board instead of a configuarable NNTP newsgroup
[/b]
Haven't talked to anyone at HTC about this because I don't see the problem. There is no way an HTML board forces you to read a thread anymore than an NNTP newsgroup would do so.
Just don't read it. If generally you get upset with a particular poster, put him/her on ignore.

You are wrong, It was not directly because of the bombings, It was because a terrible manipulation of the information made by some very popular media and press group directly controlled by the winning party, trying to make us believe that our current goverment was lying us about their findings just after the bombings.
