I have a friend who's been training for about a year and a half pretty intensely.
Before that year and a half, however, he was a daily pot smoker regular drinker and all around lethargic bucket o' crap.
He's 5'6'' about 150 and now claims to be able to do 70 pushups in a minute. He lives 3000 miles away so I can't prove or disprove his claim in person... Do I call BS on him?

Year and a half of training, with his weight and height - its easily possible.

If he's been training for that long, then he's probably telling the truth. I did 52 pushups in a minute for a police test with only about 2-3 months of training. A few other guys at the test were pounding out mid 60's.

verymuch depends on how he does his pushups.

Well, I think he does them pretty legitimately, from what I've seen, but this guy does have a long history of greatly exageratting things in his favor. In highschool he claimed to have driven his dad's stock 1989 peugot at 165 mph and later, claimed to have dated a 6 foot model--although I've never seen him with a girl in our 13 years of knowing each other.
-
Shouldnt be a problem. In highschool I played football and we trained a lot. I was a big defensive lineman and could do about that number of pushups in a minute, but then I could benchpress over 330lbs... Damn I'm weak and outtashape now. :(
-
1,5 years is alot of time but 70 in one minute sounds like BS to me, and with his history of BS ..
-
A second is a long time. But if the guy has a history of being a BS artitist then I would have to see it myself to believe him.
-
wonder how long it takes to be a sniper :D

Well, about 5 months ago he claimed he could do 100 in two minutes, I bet him 20 bucks he couldn't and he promptly shut his mouth.
A stock 80s peugot 4-door doing 165? Calling that BS would be like calling David Duke white.

and who is David Duke?

He is an KKK racist white supremacist guy who ran for political office in the US congress, thankfully he was deaeated.
However another KKK alumni and racist is currently in the senate, Robert C Byrd, the Democratic senator from west virginia. :(

A white supremacist democrat... I love it.
I wonder how many pushups he could do.
-
oh...one of those idiots. To many of those around. I know one from norway, and he is still playing this game i think.
-
It's possible.

of course its possible in even a shorter time then this, but with the guys record i would put my money on NO. You would have to be somewhat dedicated and he does not sound like a bloke that would be with his history

I think 70 proper pushups, (all the way up, lock elbows, all the way down, back straight, butt down, touch chest to ground, repeat) in a minute or less is physically impossible regardless of his strength or conditioning

World Record:
one minute: 138, William T. Mello (USA) 30 May 2002
(new record claim, not yet verified: 158, Sandy Holt (GBR) at Huddersfield Sports Centre, 8 Nov 2003)
(Note: The French edition of the Guinness Book of Records mentions a record of 199 by Jean-Yves Priol (FRA) on 5 June 1997, but many experts refuse to give credence to this claim.)
one-armed, one minute: 120; Yvan de Weber (SUI), 23 Oct 2001 in Madrid
