When driving thru the woods and stopping in my open top m3 I like to listen to the odd wood pigeon cooing mixed with the odd black bird. High in the trees a rook may caw.
At night I might even hear the odd owl
In open field land the song thrush will call out as will the chaffinch or starling.
In open moor land the crows will caw and in the farm yard i may hear a hen or even an odd duck.
Not to go over board but the odd bird sound linked to the local terrain may add a bit of realism here to missing...........
You could even add the odd sheep/cow in some fields or a dog or two in a town.........maybe even a cat in some of the field offices.....

Crickets. Just to add in here, I hear a lot more crickets at night then owls.

Not me. I never bail so never get hung up in trees :).

I can do without the sounds of a bish and a sheep having a tryst :).

heh, that's what the other games call "ambient fauna" Tilt :)
Some of the more advanced FPS games I've seen have that neat-o effect, where you camp at one point, here the monkeys and birds.. and then, they suddenly stop - u know something's nearby.
..
But I don't think it's much feasible considering we're driving GVs that make a lot of noise - .. maybe if AH finally delivers a limited FPS/ground trooper aspect??

I like this idea, Anybody who's played Combat Mission would understand what I'm saying. Birds, Wind, Artillery explosions, Machine Gun fire.
It really goes a long way for emmersion.
It would only really work for GV's though. But it might even mislead some players into thinking thier getting closer to actual action. So maybe just Birds, and rustling branches from the wind, Sheep/Cows and water when your near it.

On the fauna effects, in Total War, if the enemy lies hidden in woods they disturb the crows indicating their presence to the observant

Tilt,
Here is the sound file you requested. I don't know why you contacted me privately for this sound file, but I thought I would put it on the forum for all to see.
I am still working on the 'nude sheep' bitmap for you. I don't understand what you meant by it being an 'urgent physical need' but I am working as fast as I humanly can.
Sound file:

I will also email you the picture of myself in latex with a ball gag that you were so insistent upon.

Mixed with some ambient wind noise
Waves crashing when near an ocean.
Unrecognizable converation loops in the tower and hangar (with tool clanging noises).
