Worth renting? Its a series, no?
-
Worth owning. One of the best, if not the best things HBO has ever done.
-
Santa got me the box set for xmas. Well worth it.
I am pretty sure the History Channel is showing the whole series in April.

Yeah, thats what encourgaged me to look into it. However, comes on at 9pm at night. I'm asleep by 8pm :(

They are, however, I imagine it will also include commercials and pretty heavy editing of the 'questionable' language and battle scenes--which is voluminous.

Thks for the info guys!

I'm pretty sure that the editing will be light, for language only. I don't own a Box Set, but if I recall the episodes were only 47 minuites long, which leaves enough room for commercials. Spielberg planned in advance about series syndication.
Rip, I'm shocked you have'nt seen BOB yet...what rock have you been under?

Umm, reading, doing homework in the evenings with my children, or baseball practice, or swimming lessons, or...

Hey, I finally got to watch an "R" rated film for the first time in months! Had to drink a pot of coffee to stay awake past the kids bedtime. T3-Rise of the machines. Overrated. T1 was the best of the bunch. :)

Do they rape these programs voluntarily or is it required by the law?

Terminatrix was miscast, should've gotten Jolene Blalock from Enterprise.
Jolene (http://64.124.163.74/~jolene/htm/)
Yeah, 1 was the best, although 2 was good too. A T movie just isn't a T movie without Cameron directing.

Considering the liberal cursing and blood-squirting, and the fact that History Channel is basic cable, I think it's a given. I always support watching the unedited, letter-box version.
-
FWIW, I just finished watching the series for the second time. It was even better than the first time.
-
Yeah, buy the DVD box set.
-
I rented the DVD with the first two episodes. #3 and #4 was already checked out. Looks like a good series to buy; maybe for Christmas.
-
If you have a BJ's in the area, look there. When the DVD was going for 90 bucks or so, I got it for 25 from BJ's.
-
Eh, editing exceptions are made. I remember one of the non-cable channels (ABC?) showed Saving Private Ryan, and there was no language editing, likely because it's sufficiently "documentary-like". Same deal with Shaka Zulu when it aired years ago. Lots of African chicks running around with naked breasts flopping everywhere.
-
Honestly I doubt the History Channel will edit it at all.
For some reason, I think the FCC leaves them alone because they broadcast 'educational' programing. If Louis the XIV said '****" well whoopeeit, then the History channel lets him say '****.'
I figure BoB will be exactly as seen on HBO although I must confess... Im kinda in Rip's boat... only saw a few episodes.

Are you kidding? If you ever see that deal again, pick me up a copy!
-
its a got to own. I think it may be the best war movie ever.
-
Buy it, one of the few I bothered to.
You can skip the "Lt Sobel" episode though...Zzzz...
-
Definetly get it Rip, worth it.
-
Rip
Well worth the money to buy!
By far the best war movie ever made. You get to know some of the guys pretty well, the DVD has some of the real men talking before the episodes.
I felt like crying when some of the guys got killed or hurt.
Amazing men...
Man the part where Lt. Speers goes charging through the Germans was awsome! That guy rocked!
I think I will watch it again tonight!
-
POWN IT!
The best WW2 series I have ever seen.

That was definitely one of the best scenes. It removed any questions I ever had about the kind of guy he was. The time Bull got seperated from the Unit was great, too. Crawling thru the ditch with an out of control tank heading straight for him...wow.
-
Perhaps the best war film/series done. It has one of the more genuinely real feelings to it I've seen. Not all glamore... not all dreary... just what I'd expect from a group of people in that situation.

BTW... I've loaned it out to about 10 different couples. All of them had it back to me in less than a week (It's 10 hours worth of shows). All of them started watching just one a night, moved to 2 a night and watched the last 3 in one sitting.

-
Yeah that what was a good one too!
The whole Series is just fantastic.
The part were Winters charges up to the dike, and his men don't get the signal to go with him...
Can you imagine how that would have been?
-
No, they get the signal, it was just a few seconds late...
But anyway, I can't wait for the Pacific Theater BOB.
-
The only other war movie in my opinion that is close it Blackhawk Down.
Private Ryan a far third, Ryan has some fanstastic scenes, but the story sucks. The first 30 minutes are incredible... gut wrenching.
-
Don't forget that Band of Brothers was also based on true events. If you want to augment your connection with these guys, read the Ambrose book, it's amazing. There are even photos of the guys as young men and as old geezers at their reunions. Speers has a really sweet photo posing with a pair of grenades tied to his collar, smiling like he'd just scored the winning TD.
Seriously heart-wrentching stuff when you follow them, in your mind, from training, through war, and revisit them in their old age.
-
Rip I'm amazed you don't have this HBO set yet. It is the best war movie/series I have ever seen. It doesn't have ANY of that fancy hollywood bull$%^& in it. (IE Pearl Harbor) If you can, get the DVD collectors edition (in a metal case), it has alot of nice extras. Also be warned, a few sceens might move you to tears, I won't spoil it for you, but you'll know what I'm taking about when you get to the episodes.
PS let me know how you like it.
-
Rip, you have to get out of the bunker more often - tear yourself away from that keyboard with the badly faded 'ctrl', 'c' and 'v' keys, turn off the generator, climb up the ladder, open the submarine-style hatch, and - if the canary is still alive - take off the NBC suit. :D
It's definitely worth throwing a couple of sets of C-rats away to make room in the bunker for the BoB set.
you could get a new keyboard while you're topside, too. ;)
-
Ya, It's well worth the 10 hours. Do you have that much time RIP? Will be alot of late nights.
-
Got the book 5 years ago, it's great.
there's always *cough* DL and burn just to watch, pick up the set at another time
-
I taped it when it was broadcast the first time. I agree it is WELL worth watching.

how come you have time for 14k posts?
-
My girlfriend got me a copy on DVD, great series to own.
...-Gixer
-
I "backed up" the whole series from Cockbluster. Good series indeed, even better if you have a good home theater....the discs are in DTS
-
Worth buying!!!!!!!!!, I have a big screen wide format and 5:1 digital sound. I've watched it so many times. Nothing like the woofer knocking the misses outta bed at 2 AM:)
NUTTZ
Or just install a DVD player in your Beemer!

Whatching it right now.
So is my cat, she is sitting there right in front of the TV!!

My wife bought the box set from Costco back in November. I like the series, but don't forget to watch the documentary.
Only problem I had was that every time Ron Livingston comes on I think "Office Space"....
Great set, I'm glad I own it.
-
Best BOB quote:
"Where the hell are we?"
"Well were not in hell. Its too ****ing cold!"
-
Rent the first 4 episodes (at Blockbuster they pack 2 episodes in 1 rental)... then.. if you like it, go out and purchase it the last 2 episodes are a wrap up, and not as "intense" but its a great series, very much recommend buying it. You'll probably only see the entire thing once, and a few of the episodes a few times, its a long sit through if you want to watch the entire series from start to finish (10 hours or so..)
Take care rip...
-
Just got to the part where two of the guys are telling a replacement about Speers shooting prisoners after he gave them smokes and speers walks up... The offers some smokes... Great stuff.
The part where Goneria on Toye get it is coming..............:( sucks.
