I just moved from a small town in Colorado back to Colorado Springs and now have options besides a basic phone-modem.
US West offers a DSL/ISP service for $48.00 a month + a $99.00 modem, no instalation fee.
Adelphia Cable offers a cable-modem/ISP service for $40.00 a month (including $7.00 modem rental) and a $99.00 instalation fee.
Please let me know what kind of connections you have had if you have used a similar service. The only issue that I care much about is a reliable connect to AH. I am tired of discoes,... good connect,... bad connect,... good connect, bad connect,...

I have had ADSL for about 10 days..many of my friends have cable. Your prices are high...by comparison I am paying 27$ us a month no modem fee. 27$ setup ..I have converted that from canadian.
It seems to work great. I had the same router problems everyone else had last week. but other then that 24/7
All internet stuff is blinding fast.

Get DSL, its your bandwidth..cable is shared by as many as 1000 people, cable is faster if nobody is online but you, but performance suffers when others share it with you.
DSL is the way to go..plenty fast euf..and you never have to worry bout others bogging it down.

I have ADSL in Moscow, Idaho. I basically pay for bandwidth priority. For example, I pay around $250/mo (ouch!) for a guaranteed 1.5MB/S. You can pay $50/mo for 384KB/S; what this means is that if no one is around, you can get 1.5MB/S. But if somebody who bought higher priority (like 768KB/S, 1MB/S, or 1.5MB/S) connects, the lowest priority user will get kicked off to make bandwidth space for the higher-paying users, or get downgraded to a measly 56KB/S. Since this is Idaho, I have a backup normal 56K V.90 ISP. You never know when ADSL is going to crap out. Hi Eskimo,
Don't have any advice for you, but would like to know which you decide upon and how it is working. I, too, live in C-springs and was considering going to a DSL setup.
Also, if you are interested, the squad Buconeers are a large group based in C-springs....they fly for the Knits. Might want to talk with a few of them, someone might already be hooked up to DSL or Adelphia.

Basically, this decision must be made based on your cable and DSL providers and where you live. Your first step should be to ask the telco how far from the Head Office (digital switching gear) your address is. The further you are, the slower your DSL is going to be. Second is to ask the cable company how many other subscribers are on the loop you will be on. This should give you some idea of the relative speeds. The best way to judge it would be to talk to folks with both connection types in your immediate area if you can.

I live in Coloradp Springs and have been using US West DSL for over five months.
The service has been nearly flawless. I have had a connection problem with US West only twice, and only for about an hour.
I occasionally get a dump from AH, but that seems to be more of a net problem. Usually, my connection is rock solid.
Keep in mind that the $49.00 rate gets you 256k service plus ISP service w/ 2 email adresses and some web space. A friend of mine with cable actually gets better throughput (over 500k), but it is a shared service which may degrade over time as more users sign up. There are may also be more security issues with a shared loop.
My guess is that as more vendors arrive in Colorado Springs, the price for DSL will be going down over time.

BTW RAS, I am a Buccaneer. Only 1 Buccaneer uses cable, But he lives in Alaska (oosik, my brother). I don't think that anyone else is using DSL.

Stay away from the Road Runner cable modem service. It is an oversubscribed service with a crappy connection to the Internet.

Thanks for the responces. The cable company was willing to wave the instalation fee. I have decided to try them out, in spite of the fact that it sounds like DSL may be a better service. I have nothing to risk, just a flat $40.00 per month.
