If I won it in a raffle, I might be able to buy enough fuel to start it, that's 'bout it.

I've seen this one up close and in person at the Sun-n-Fun fly-in in Lakeland, Florida.  The chrome effect of the high-polish metal is very eye-catching but leaves no doubt that its a showbird and not a warbird.  I'm used to the flatter natural finish on D-stangs.

Just tell the guy - "I'd buy it but I don't like the color." :p

Knowing that if someone were to give it to you, you could not afford to get certified in it or even pay for the gas to fly it makes you feel REALLY poor.

Sell your DVD collection and you could buy the thing outright and afford gas for 10 years.

Afford gas for 10 years?  Maybe if I only flew it twice.

Those planes are costing $300-$500 per hour to fly (fuel cost only).  I couldn't even imagine how much it costs to get specialized instruction for one.

I'd settle for an empty shell of a warbird (F4U preferably) to place in my backyard. Anything like that for sale?

www.avrovulcan.com (http://www.avrovulcan.com/)

It may not be a war bird or airworthy but considering I'm 16 years old it's not a bad start. Look in the volunteers section for 'Jamie Everitt'. I know it's not airworthy but someones gotta look after the thing (and it's still fun to play with a nuclear bomber on a saturday).

Jus' remember that your B-52s would have been half way across the baltic sea by the time this babys making mushroom clouds over moscow.

If I bought it, I would fly it illegally off some dirt strip in the country.

Yeah, it looks rather stealthy.  Nothing a few hundred migs couldn't pick up on.

Pretty. Wouldn't be so pretty atomized by a barrage of SAMs though, to say nothing of the fact that the B-70 Valkarie makes it look like a Sopwith Camel.

Title: Fuel..
Post by: Golfer on March 24, 2004, 06:26:21 PM
The fuel burn won't be that bad.  Figure it packs 269 usable gallons internally.

figure $2.65/gallon 100LL Avgas to fill it up (I would fly it to Madison County, UYF, in Ohio to fill it up at a bargain price of 2 bucks a gallon)

$712.85 to fill it up.

(Source is Mustangsmustangs.com)

Since we won't be getting into combat with our P-51, 325 mph will be our cruise speed and we will always cruise at 10,000 feet for this expirement.

Combat Range of 1125 miles at 325 mph gives a 3.46 hour endurance.  burning 269 gallons in 3.46 hours yields an 89.6 GPH fuel flow.  This is off because it is combat range and I do not know how it is determined, it is figured for higher power settings for a duration of time...No idea on real figures.

Anyways...figure 89.6gph $237.44/hr for fuel...this is quite high but it gives you a good ballpark figure but don't forget oil.  In addition to annual inspections, unscheduled maint and misc consumables (tires, brakes ect ect) you're looking at a pretty nice chunk of change.

Aside from ownership costs and hangering...plan on budgeting $300/hr just to fly your P-51.

Anybody wanna go halfises :)

Maybe if we pooled our money and as a community purchased a P-51...

You can find them in Brazil but they cost quite a bit to get shipped up here and resassembled.  I know several folks who looked into it for restoration purposes.

I just checked my FBO's 100 low lead price today...better
sit down  $4.05 a gallon.  Admittedly we're rediculous, but
that's up there.

Believe it or not, that's the going rate for a decent 51 these
days.

Still looking at $300-500/hr to fly it.  Hehehe... You don't even want to think what it would cost to fire 6 .50's for 10 seconds.

The somewhat funny thing is the Migs and Sus that were popular during the mid 90's.  Those things are running $1k-3k per hour to fly (just fuel)... you don't even want to know what maintenance costs.  Most can't afford to fly them unless they're taking them to an air show that pays their fuel.

The key is not to go halfsies but 20 sies. Or even 40 sies. Then you begin to look at something feasable and just as much fun.

You forgot insurance!:(

40 people would be 35,000 Dollars or so to buy the bird. Within the reach of one or two of you I'll warrant (Cougar owners:D ) . Say all up cost of $800 to put it in the air for an hour thats $20 each.

I would buy that. :aok
