Title: ground warriors!
Post by: 68DevilM on March 25, 2004, 08:32:29 AM
Since my last post on the subject on nukes another brainstorming thought came to mind about how to make the game more realistic than it alread is.

so heres another!:D

I propose ground troops, what beter than a rocket propelled armor pearcing  shoulder mounted weapon carring soldier (10 rounds per re-up) capable of sneaking up and takeing out gv's at say 500 to 1000 yards, and also 1 satchel charge capable of destroying a vh, or hanger?

these sodiers would be very vulnerable to any kind of anemy fire but if used right, (recon) i think it could be very cool, and even cooler if we could drop these guys from a plane over a target.:aok

As I understand it, this is a WWII combat FLIGHT Sim.

Have you tried WWII Online?

Many people fly AH and play WWII online as well.

so, I guess I vote no to groundpounders.

cheers,
RTR

ahh yes a flight sim game that features actual squads dedicated to gv's, i know! i frequently engage in some seriously intence fighting on the ground while the air war rages above.

mabey it wasnt intended to be at first but it has evolved and i enjoy fighting on the ground just as much as i love to dog fight.

play ah and wwiiol, here, nuke I recommend you try it.  Try this analogy:

Aces High: Air War as WWIIOL: Ground war

I THINK AHII will have these type of options.  I believe that is why HTC has gone to such lengths to model trees etc so they can add first person stuff.

I'd rather have a jeep with a .50 cal.  Could be used the same way, except the air drop of course, but would be fast enough to actually be useful for airbase defense.

And more than 3 types of tanks would be nice.

Excellent ideas! Although AH started as a Flight Sim, it has and continues to evolve as much more. I like the ideas coming in this thread, from the individual soldier with weapon options to the fast Jeep with .50 Cal Mount on it.
WW2 online is certainly an option for some, but this is my game of choice, and i welcome new changes that HT and the players bring. Each new idea broadens the game and the way that all players, reguardless of Air or Ground,  can interract.

Thinking of the Jeep option a bit more, what about the Jeep carrying say 4-5 troops in it, and being able to travel faster than the M3, say about 50 percent faster.  Obviously multiple Jeeps needed to bring enough troops to capture a base. New dimension of base capture with fast jeeps swarming all over.
Or, Jeeps carrying the recoiless rifle mount, or other weaponry.

Food for thought....

The story of the SAS jeep...

http://ourworld.compuserve.com/homepages/jeep_man/sasjeep.htm

The SAS are so kick arse... :D

Vehicles obtained by the British Army through the Lend-Lease Scheme were obtained and suitably modified for SAS use.

Their first successful raid soon followed on 17th November 1941, when two groups destroyed 61 aircraft at two airfields. Another raid was launched soon after; this time twenty seven were destroyed. By July 1942 the regiment had 15 specially modified jeeps in action in North Africa.

The jeeps were stripped of all non-essential parts including the windscreen, most of the radiator grille bars and even sometimes the front bumper to increase the effective load carrying capacity of the vehicle. Thus the large amount of fuel and water needed for fast long-range raids could be carried avoiding the need for slower support vehicles. A water condensing unit was fitted to the front to reduce loss from the radiator which would otherwise have had to be topped up from the limited drinking water supplies. The jeeps also carried sand mats, metal wheel channels, radio equipment and large quantities of ammunition.

The jeeps were heavily armed with combinations of both Browning and Vickers K machine guns. The ex-aircraft Vickers weapons were generally mounted in pairs and a total of up to five machine guns were carried on some vehicles. The effectiveness of this armament firing a mix of ball, armour-piercing and tracer shells can be judged from one assault on an airfield where 12 aircraft were destroyed in a five minute raid. With all guns blazing a single SAS jeep could deliver an impressive 5000 rounds per minute! The net result was that over 400 aircraft had been destroyed on the ground by November 1942. Stirling was finally captured in 1943 but escaped four times before being sent to Colditz where he spent the rest of the war.

It would be interesting to see first person stuff brought into AH2.

Can you imagine people vulching with grenades? Or shooting at planes taking off with their 45's?

AH2 is going to be a whole new game all together. One which when it comes out alot of people are going to be grounded due to the demand of a very up to date system.

I am nearly done building my new system that was based around playing AH2 and other on line games that require a much better system than what I have already. $2000 or so later and Im nearly done. This is the most expencive game I've ever gotten into. But being the on line drug that it is I cant just stop playing;)

if were going to be talking about troops this is what i want

a base would have defence troops around it and evertime you shot 1 you hear a PING

tho i realy dont see anything wrong with moving the game more into the ground

maybe you could have a fleet like of tanks and you control it like you do with cv's

now you got a real ground front

I think HTC is either A} gonna pull thier heads out and make one hell of a WWII sim, with features no one else has, before another game co does and HTC is left holding the bag with a few hundred players logging on now and then  B} polish up a worn AH1, call it AH2 and hope more people start playing C} keep AH1 & AH2, and between the two of them they can support their salaries/equipment.

I just think it's a shame that there is HOW many millions of people in the US alone {not to mention over seas} and all we can get in the arena at any one given time is approx 5-600?

I would like to see 800-1000 players per Country, with direct and indirect roles in the game.
You could have not only "squads" but entire "groups" or whatever you wanna call them, comprised of Pilots, ground units, strat personel, resource management, commanders and such.
Anyone ever notice how mnay people play {not that I like the game personally} EverQuest or Dark Age of Camelot ?  It's like thousands and any given time. YES i know it's a differnt type of game, so dont start bustin' my chops, but the whole point is there is so much to do, roles to play, goals to achieve, consequences for your actions and so forth.
I will always play AH, not saying that HTC doesn't provide hours of enjoyment with some great people. But lets face it, the gaming world changes very rapidly and I would hate to see this one be another Air Warrior or Warbirds

68devil, i think the game you should try is planetside. i got to try it for a month for free and it is cool. massive air/land battles. it cost $13 a month to subscribe. i agree with moil's vision, that would be cool. but htc makes a nice small flight sim game with a few gv's. we will all see what the future has in store for our game.

Actually if I am not mistaking HT said in an interview that he eventually wants both Submarines and ground troops (Firt Person Style) in the game. Not sure if the interview is still on the net, maybe someone has a link?

So it's not unlikely that we will one day, hopefully quite soon, see the ground war expanded with player troops.

...it's a nice piece of hardware. Unfortunately the M1A1-2 wins my heart as the best slab of metal on two tracks.

After reading about one of those tanks getting bogged down and still dispatching three T72s while taking direct hits i nearly died laughing. The american tankers survived to tell the tale, the iraqis in this instance did not.

Nha, German steel will always win on the battlefield.
