Not surprising when you consider the demographics of the rest of the world, most of which is NOT like the US/UK/Canada/Europe etc. For example, America has about 5% of the world's population but drives about 40% of the world's vehicles! In China, there is about one car per 300,000 population.

I wouldnt find it surprising except for the recent global explosion of cell phones which makes it much easier to install telephone infrastructure in 3rd world nations compared to line based systems.
