With 512MB of memory installed AH will intermittently crash to desktop with no rhyme or reason. With 256MB memory installed it runs like a charm. Any suggestions... besides the obvious!
Win98se
AMD 1.4 processor
asus a7m266
GeForce3 Ti500 vidcard
dx 9.something

have you tried each 256 by itself?
I am wondering if one is bad.

sounds like bad simm or slot
are they the same brand? should be as identical as possible

It was just a bad stick of memory. Went out and bought a 512MB stick and it is working fine.
Now, how much memory can win98se handle effectvely? I am thinking about putting the good stick in slot 2 for 768MB

It actually only uses 128MB of ram for programs. The rest is used for data secgments only aka EMM386.
You can actually slow down Windows 98 with too much ram due to its rather limited memory manangement capabilites.

DmdBT, dont do it. i have seen this before. often times 2 sticks of memory can both be good quality memory with nothing wrong with either. install either by itself puter works fine, put both in and bugs or probs. i had experimented with several combinatins in my machine and found that it ALWAYS runs faster and more reliably with a single stick. in fact it works better with a single 128 than it does with 2 matching sticks of 128, go figure. i now have a single cl2 256 stick in it. ive read on bbs sites that cater to win stuff that 98 can simply not utilise more than 128 mb of ram sounds like youve already got as much as you need. i sure wouldnt start playin the mix an match game again. refer to wht skuzzy sayin bout 98 memory managment

I had the same problem with the same motherboard. It's a motherboard bug, the A7M266 just isn't stable with both memory slots populated. I bullied the system builders into swapping the 2 simms for one 512mb one and it worked perfectly afterwards. Those two 256mb simms are probably OK.

Sheesh... I hadn't noticed what motherboard he had. I had two of those boards within a year that had slot #2 failure. I replaced the second one with an A7N266-C that is still goin strong in my Guam machine.

Skuzzy does this apply to Windows ME as well?

Win 98se uses 32mb's of ram for basic operation , It can only use up to 512mb's of ram total .anything more is a waste .
(note you can add a program to it that will optemize it for more ram , but it really doesnt really make much of a perf gain)
I do use duel 512's in my asus mb and 98se it seams to work fine .
I beleive ME is the same but it uses a little more basic ram
