its not soccer, its football.
None of this "Jump-on-the-floor-knuckleheads-running-into-eachother-ball" you yanks play as a break between saggy tit shows and commercials.

They won't show the saggy tit shows unless you pay extra on Pay-Per-View. Instead, we get British-spawned shows like American Idol and The Weakest Link.
edit: ... and I'm afraid us Yanks are going to get pwnd. We tied Haiti 1-1 for God's sake!

Beside running up and down the field in their undershorts, just what is the point of soccer. The real action begins after the game when the losers burn down the nearest town.

darn!
USA 1:0 Poland

yes Funked... you have to wait till 2006 world Cup :)
-
HAHAHA then I'll win 1000kg kabanosy and 500l vodka :)
-
Frog..a friendly is just a practice game, much like your Pro-Bowl or any pre-season game. They don't "count" for anything.
Basically it is a chance to get practice in a real-game situation. I don't understand your objection to it.
WTG USA...you guys are getting better at the "beautiful game".
Poland..you should be ashamed of yourselves.;)
-
it will be just a note :) I was sure we will win...
USA football (the real one!) team is ranked 12 in the world while Poland is ranked 24
Over 20000000 is actively playing soccer in USA - that is more then a half of the population of Palnd :)
I believe Yanks gonna win the Wold Cup some day.... but before that, they will get a havy spanking in a 2006 WC... and our team will do it!
-
actually, you don't have to wait that long, bike. July 11th, 7pm EDT in Chicago. :) Poland gets to come play over here.
was a decent showing by both teams. Poland had some really good opportunites that Friedel saved, and the US blew a couple of easy chances (especially Mathis about 10 yards out. wtf was that???) Wow, I think Reyna should play d-mid for us from now out. He's much better at it than Armas.
-
Soccer has got to be the most boring sport to watch...even worse than golf or baseball.
-
How long will it take you to realise its what team you watch that makes it boring?
Its the same with any sport, you cannot really generalise the sport as a whole when your average yank has no idea who they are watching - let alone how good they are.
If you want to watch a good football match, watch one of the top English/Spanish teams play, its far from boring.
-
Bermuda 3 Nicaragua 0.
Sean Goater scores 2, just missed a hat-trick.
Next stop...World Cup. ;)

We're 12th in the world? I didn't know that. Interesting.
Half the population that plays "soccer" here is under the age of 15, and they usually quit playing when they get big enough to play American football.
-
I'm hoping they get rid of the offsides rule to open up the field of play, like in basketball where a point can be scored at any moment by anybody from anywhere.

Nah, one of the reasons why "soccer" hasn't taken off in the US is because we're spoiled on scoring. Hockey has more shots on goal than "soccer" over here. People like to see the boards light up. Over here, even if an American football team can't get within 30 yards of the endzone, at least we get to see the field goal team come out and try a shot at scoring. In baseball, every single pitch has the potential of being a home run (some have more potential than others, of course).
Another reason is that nobody has figured out a way to air commercials during a game without interrupting the action. Without commercials, the television money isn't going to be there. Without the tv money, the quality of player isn't going to be on the field. Without quality players, there won't be much interest in watching a game.
-
do what they do here, and air them during half time, before and after the game. Sky paid over £1bn or $1.8bn for the TV rights for the English Premiership.
Getting rid of the offside rule would just ruin the sport. Dont forget your country is pretty much the only one in the world where football is not popular, no need to change it just to suit your tastes.

I forgot to mention the "Vodafone" emblem on the Man U jersey. We don't have that here. People expect to see the team name on the shirt, or at least a logo. Plus, tv doesn't like to show the logo of a company that hasn't paid the tv station to advertise. Even in NASCAR which is filled with corporate billboards, in the post-race interview the tv cameraman will go to great lengths to get a nice tight close-up of the driver's face, not because its more dramatic, but because he can block-off the sponsor logos outside the frame.
Tv networks aren't willing to wait an hour to show a commercial. Even the NFL, the almight pro sport, will take a "tv timeout" if the action continues longer than 20 minutes. One thing that was tried with soccer over here was a "box in a box" broadcast: the action would be in the center box and company billboards would frame the sides, top, and bottom. Unfortunately, this made it difficult to see the player because it reduced the size of the viewing area, and if the camera zoomed in on the player it cut off the players who were off-camera ready to make a play.
So, the best hope for US "soccer" is at the youth and school levels, or recreation on weekends. We grow the players, then send them overseas.
Meanwhile, sports like American football, basketball, and baseball will continue to do well, mostly because the action fits well in a tv screen, there are frequent stoppages of play, and because there is a lot of scoring.

laser...do you know how to play cricket? The rules etc? It is a facsinating game if you know what is going on.
I always felt American Football was boring...guys line up, slam into each other and the play ends. Rinse and repeat...with an occasional pass thrown in.
Having learned the rules I now appreciate the game for all of the strategy and the fact that despite appearances it is organised war on a playing field. Before I knew what was happening it just looked like a confused mass of players going on and off the field in between plays.
-
... and don't forget, all those guys coming on and off the field aren't coming off because they're tired. The personnel changes because of what the other team is going to do.
-
Furball, don't worry about it if some people can't appreciate soccer.
GoFaster the issue isn't how to advertise during the soccer game in America, it's the fact that the ratings for the game are low. Advertising in soccer is actually more effective than in say football because you're actually seeing the ads while watching the game not during commercials when you might change to another game, go to the bathroom, or get another beer from the fridge. Overseas, the teams have a sponsor on the front of their jerseys, here it's on the back. Yup, MLS jerseys have sponsors on them, for example New England has Pespi on their jerseys and San Jose has yahoo sports (well, last year they did, dunno about this year, I'll let you know after Saturday when they play DC on ABC.) Plus, the entire field is ringed with billboards. Actually, come to think of it, hockey rinks do this as well. ESPN also has sponors that "bring you the game action commercial free." The announcers every 5 or 10 minutes mention the current sponsor and you see that sponsor's logo by the displayed score/time remaining in the upper corner of your TV. The problem comes from the fact that the average MLS game on espn2 doesn't pull the ratings that the average MLB game will pull on espn on Wed and Sunday nights. Of course Budweiser is going to pay epsn more to advertise during MLB than MLS.
Best hope for American soccer is already in place, and it's MLS along with seeing Americans do well overseas. It gives kids someone to look up to playing that sport. We're already starting to see some of that. Landon Donovan, DaMarcus Beasley and Bobby Convey were all about 11 and 12 when we hosted the World Cup in 1994. They saw Tab Ramos, Alexi Lalas and others take on the world and advance out of group play. Two years later they saw a professional league start up here at home. They said "I can get paid to play my sport!" They saw Brad Friedel leave MLS to go to England. Now they are playing in MLS and on the National team. Now you've got Freddy Adu, a 14 year old kid about to make his pro debut. He's been on talk shows, Sports Illustrated and even 60 Minutes. The youth playing soccer have people to look up to here, and not just overseas. Ten years ago, we didn't have that here. For the USA to be in the top 20 in the world in the FIFA rankings, for us to finish in the top 8 in World Cup 2002 is damn impressive considering that our top flight professional league isn't even in its 10th season yet.
I doubt that the USA will ever win a World Cup in my lifetime. There have been 17 World Cups, and only 7 Nations have won them (Brazil 5, Germany 3, Italy 3, Argentina 2, Uruguay 2, England 1, France 1) and only 4 other nations have ever played in the Finals (Czechoslovakia 2, Hungary 2, Holland 2, Sweden 1.) It's extraordinarly hard to make it to the Championship game, let alone win it. We just don't have the history of the sport here to have the rabid fan base which would support the domestic leagues with gobs of liquid cash which would draw the best athletes to play soccer. Just imagine Michael Vick as a striker for the US Men's Team if he had played soccer all of his life. But, soccer has to share the spotlight here with four other mainstream sports, and it's 5th out of 5 here. In Europe, it competes with rugby and cricket (and basketball in some areas) but it's #1 out of all those sports. If US Soccer was as popular and well supported as the NFL, then the US Men's team would consistently challenge for the World Cup. It's not, so to make the Quarterfinals of WC 2002 and play VERY well against the 2002 runner up is highly commendable for our country.

Nifty raises some good points and certainly speaks from a more knowledgable position. I bow to his judgment. And I think he's spot on.
But remember, before MLS there was MISL. And before MISL there was another pro league (name escapes me) that folded. Hopefully MLS will hang on.
