ok gs I know its been asked before but whats the best sight for a ostie and how the hell do you manage to kill with one shot.
I lite upp a plane with a ostie and it just flew right by!!!!:lol
-
If you lite up anything but a b17 or B26(and usually them too) ti will die. If your hitting thats all you have to do with an osti.
-
1 hit is enough to bring any fighter down, including the tough F6F's, LA7's and P38's. usually take a few more for a bomber but a single hit to a B17 wingtip and it'll blow off, that's enough for a kill.
-
The only thing I've seen take an Ostie hit and live (and isn't a bomber) is the Il-2. Bombers can take 2-4 hits sometimes, depends on where the rounds land.
The best sight is not to use the sight at all, frankly. The sight is only useful for when someone is basically coming straight at you. Anything resembling a crossing shot probably has 2 or 3 times the amount of lead that the gunsight can give... you need to basically aim a half-screen in-front of the target to get correct lead even at D1.0
The thing to do is, go offline and record yourself shooting at drones for a bit, then watch it in the film viewer. Note where you were aiming and jump into the target aircraft to see where the rounds were actually passing (usually well behind) and adjust your technique. Remember, the drones are easy targets too, 200mph, 3,000ft and ranges of only D1.0 (if you are directly under them). Anything faster than that, or at longer range, and you need even more lead on them to even be close.

I took a hit in a B5N2 "Kate" and lived. I was missing one of my landing gear, but I lived.
My Il-2's commonly survive the first hit, it is the followups that seem to doom me.
-
I once survived 3 direct hits from an Ostie (in an il2 admittedly) and nearly died of shock.

The A20 stands it well too.
But the mosquito resists it best ;)

F6Fs and TBMs have taken one hit to their engine and carried on flying. Normal fighters only usually take one hit to bring them down. Buffs can take 3 - 7 hits to bring them down.
Rog, I have quite a good sight available if you wanna supply your email?

I have never, in all the times I've been hit by an Ostwind in a Mosquito, survived.
In my experience the Mosquito is a pretty fragile aircraft in AH and a single 37mm hit will kill it every time.
The three things that usually happen are: 1) Wing is severed 2) Fuselage is severed aft of the wing 3) Pilot is killed instantly.
I did have a Spitfire Mk XIV survive a hit from an NS-37 37mm cannon on the Yak-9T. That one isn't as powerful, but it still surprised me that I lost a radiator and not the whole wing.

I have never survived a 37mm hit in a mossie myself. Do it quite often in an il2 tho.

Mosquito catches on fire when shot by bb gun.

Best way to aim the Ostie is to :
1. Go to gunner view and set mouse cursor on gunsight pipper.
2. Hit page up key to raise your head position above gunsight.
Now not only can you see around you you can also get good lead for the crossing shot and for the planes that fly straight away in a gentle climb not using evasives you can get that 3.0k killing shot on them. Aim about an inch and ahalf above plane and let him fly into you tracer stream.
