Title: Smoking and the internet
Post by: Habu on April 01, 2004, 01:29:21 PM
Gotta love the internet. It is the greatest weapon against stupid government policys.

If you are annoyed that your state is slapping high taxes on cigarettes you can still buy out of state.

Cheap USA Cigarettes Delivered (http://www.bestdeal-cigarettes.com)

To bad they don't deliver to Canada where cigarettes are now around $5 a pack.

suprised thats legal.   you'd think they'd have to apply the states cig tax.   if I buy cigs somewhere cheap and sell them here, they call it bootlegging and lock you up for tax evasion. (the local cops informed me of that when I was a kid.  buying them for about $3 less per carton at the PX, when we made our monthly grocery run to the air-base and selling them to friends. )

I get my Marlboro Reds cheaper here in Florida, and if they jack the price, I can go across the line and get them in Georgia. Not bad though when you buy 4 cartons you actually save, but only if you buy 4 cartons.

They don't look too cheap to me at $23.99 a carton for Marlboro. I pay $23.99 in Texas at WalMart and don't have to pay extra for shipping.

Depends on what state you are in. Check out the price of them in places like California and the Internet store is much cheaper.

The Internet store is selling them for what they would cost without a lot of state taxes on a carton. In Texas they must not have a high state tax so you get a normal price.

The other thing (not that its a big deal unless you are really in the middle of nowhere) is that the cigarettes are made in North Carolina so the Internet store is selling ones that are probably made that month.

In Canada the provincial government puts a "sin tax" on alcohol and cigarettes. That is why a case of beer (24 cans) costs $35 Canadian while when you go over the border to Michigan you can buy a discount brand for under $10. Just wait for state governments to follow our lead. It is very lucrative and does not really raise a big protest as say a hike in state sales tax would.

However these Internet stores defeat the success of such taxes so I support the concept 100%.

Don't do this is you live in Washington.  They'll still tax you on them.  I'm pretty sure most states are going to follow suit.

How can they know if you get a UPS delivery? They can't.

It's all about sticking it to the man.

The Seminole Indians used to sell (maybe they still do) cigarettes from their reservation.  Federal land, you know, no state sales tax.  They did a pretty good business but the casino did better.  They just built a Hard Rock Hotel and Casino on their land.  Now if they'd only add Vegas showgirls they'd have something.

Hmm. Poor Americans.

Here a pack of American cigarettes costs around $0.6. I prefer local brands that are better, "XXI Century" mild, charcoal biofilter, great tobacco, costs me 13 rubles, about 40 US cents. Ordinary cigarettes from local fatories cost 20-30 cents a pack.

I miss early 90s, when I went to a market and bought French Galouises (sp?) military packs, that short and thick stuff packed in plain paper, with strong black cigar tobacco. They were so strong that only maniacs like me smoked them, and they were cheaper then local brands.

Here if you are out of money you can buy sans filtre cigs that cost about 10 cents a pack, or papirosy like Belomorkanal. Really strong and quite different from what you are used to, but nice. I know some extemely wealty people who drive Mercedeces and smoke Belomor because they got used to it 20-30 years ago.

Habu where do you buy cigarettes in Canada for 5 bucks a pack?

I pay $10.40 a pack.

Funny thing is. In Saskatchewan, you actually pay 100% (yes you read that right) "sin" tax on your deck of cigarettes. That plus provincial and federal sales tax.

I better get damned good health care service when i get lung cancer.:rofl

$9 here is a week of moderate living, without beer or other alcohol. Or maybe chaeapest beer will fit. My weekly spendings are about $40 total including everything, but I can cut it by 50% easily.

I am in Ontario, they lowered down the price a few years back to stop the smuggleing but it has crept back up. But $10.40 is just absolutely crazy. I remember when beer was a dollar a bottle and I thought that was outragous (how I long for those days) now I can see the day when cigarettes will be a dollar each.

Oh okay, yeah i knew they were cheap in ontario because of smuggling and people selling off-reserve.

Guess that is why Saskatchewan has the brown plastic on the packs to indentify them and remind us of where we are taking it.

If there's a tax on them in Washington, the company has to report the sale to the state in order to mail their wares into the state.  Many people purchasing cigarettes through this company didn't realize it and were quite pissed when the state of Washington sent out the tax notice regarding it.

If ya want CHEAP smokes THIS PLACE (http://www.discount-cigarettes-store.com/marlboro/) has 'em. Read the disclaimer, they were manufactured for sale outside the US. You wil notice a HUGE difference in them. The premium tobacco that they use in US smokes is not what is in these. That's why American cigarettes are cheaper overseas, you are buying the brand name only, not the real deal.

I may be mistaken, but I believe that they banned sales taxes on items online except for buying them from the state you are currently in.

I.E. If the store is located in PA (i'm in PA too), I'd have to pay the 6% sales tax on it as well as the other taxes.  However, anyone buying from another state won't have to pay it.

I talked to the owner of that business today to see what the situation is regarding taxes.

He told me that they do not ship to California or New York because those states will try to reclaim taxes from out of state sales. However he has never been asked to turn over any documents to any state so your odds of getting hit with a bill for unpaid taxes is very low.

He has never had a customer who has been billed by a state directly for taxes as he has never provided any sales information to any state.

So if the sale takes place on a server ... where is the server....  in the US ... I'd like to see them get taxes from say .. Canada or-or ... like Turkey ..

fools .. if they press US websites, all that will happen is they will move elsewhere ....

call it 'Brain Drain' 'Economic Drain' whatever .. the country was founded to get away from handsomehunk policys ... now we love these policys

What happens when they all move over seas, they have to go after the buying citizen?  You better make sure the guy you bought your cigs from paid HIS taxes, HA!  wouldn't surpise me a bit.
