was'nt there a post in here somewhere about needing to install the latest version of direct x?

You mean Pyro's post in News, Announcements, & Information for the last two Betas?
NOTE: This beta version requires DirectX 9. If you are using an older version of DirectX, you will need to upgrade. Go to http://www.microsoft.com/directx to update.

Here is a link to nVidia's WinXP driver page:
http://www.nvidia.com/object/winxp_2k_56.72
The newest nVidia drivers were released on April 1, 2004. You manufacturer will not have drivers this new. Most likely they will be many months old.
Make sure you have a GeForce card before installing these.
