The cockpit is just about done, engine is next. I re-painted the outer guage panels grey instead of black after these pics

Which kit is that?

It's DiabloTX's
It's a Heller 1/24th kit, I'm building it for him. I hand painted all the gauges.....I'm going to put an all out effort into this project.... Diablo is a man with over 10 years of service to our country and I will not let him down.
-
That's some awesome work. I hope to be that patient someday, but I don't feel like waiting until then.
-
Phenomenal work there, Nuke.
I'm impressed.
-
HOLY ****! You hand painted those Gauges?
I'm embarassed about my P51 now.. :lol
I never did finish it..

that really makes me feel good, thanks Sandman and majic
-
Hey Nuke, thanks for the preview. I knew when I saw your work on that P-51 that you were the one to build this model. Thanks for your thoughts in making this kit for me, it truly means a lot to me. Like the others, I am anxiously awaiting further pics.
Oh yeah, Nuke, my brother Ted that brought that kit to you, is now a licensed glider pilot. Hopefully I can hook you up for a free ride with him sometime. And hopefully I can be out there when it happens!
Again, thanks bro! :aok
-
How the heck do you get so detailed? Mine look like crap when I'm done, so I give them to the neighborhood kids to blow up with fire crackers.

I'd love a Mustang

Oh, that was you Mart all those years ago? Thanks bud!

That looks impressive
 :aok

Superb Nuke.
Are the instrument panels decals or did you paint them?
Ravs
-
Holy crap, that's some detail.
Gorgeous. Can't wait to see the finished project.
-
Ya, My buddy Nuke is definitely talented.
-

Update.
Most of this pic forward of the cockpit will not be visible in the end, but I wanted to get it at least descent should someone like Martlet blows the model up a few years from now :)
The motor of the kit was a little rough in the fit , but next is the fun part....
-
how the......................
-
Nuke, my nephews dig this but don't appreciate the small scale... take a picture w/ a coin so they can relate? Thanks buddy.

ty buddy and tell the boys I said thanks.
The model is actually a huge model, it's 1/24th scale..... twice as large as I usually make. I've made a couple of 1/32nd as a kid, but never one this large.
The instrument panel is about the 3/4th the size of a quarter.
-
Nuke, MOST impressive especially with the quarter for scale. Do you do any work for mueum display?
-
Ya know, I was thinking about the fact that you're going through all that work painting things that are going to end up getting covered.
Strange....
But then I thought about the whole project itself. A plane that your friends won't understand and are really not going to give a crap about...
...and in all likelihood your wife would roll her eyes at... but will reluctantly let you place on a shelf despite the fact that it runs counter to her grand decor plans for the room.
They'll all see this thing, and file it under "plane".
But when you look at it, you'll always "see" the detail under the exterior as immediately as if that engine were glued to the wing.
So, totally worth it.
Good job Nuke.
-
Nuke,
Absolutely awesome!!! You've got talent :)
Thanks for sharing!
-
bloody hell.......that's taking aero modelling to a new level.....
-
outstanding work NUKE :)
-
thanks for all the complements guys, I really appreciate all of them. I wanted to aknowledge what you have said , but also thought that I don't want to appear as too much of an attention potato......
I hope you guys don't mind if I update this thread with pics from the construction through the final result.

Couldn't have said it better myself. This is so like waiting for a baby to be born.
Nuke, correct me if I'm wrong but that's a Heller 1/24 kit I sent right? I know the scale I just can't remember what manufacturer it is, even though it sat in my closet for over 10 years.
Is there anything cooler than a large scale FW-190 model being constructed by a TRUE artist?
-
No big update, nothing exciting....just an update for anyone interested.
The fuselage is nearly joined and will require putty and sanding to eliminate gaps and lines. I have added seatbelts made from masking tape and some other minor details to the cockpit area.

It's all downhill from here
-
Go man GO!

Is everything airbrushed, or do you hand paint some of it?
-

I hand paint the small parts. I also hand paint the "wash" that highlights and builds contrast in many areas, like the exhaust pipes seen here.
I airbrushed the exhaust in aluminum for example, then ran a burnt umber oil wash over the pipes to make them seem heat faded.

Please do! It's looking quite impressive.

WOW!
Nuke, your work is amaizing, impressive, embarassing....
Why embarassing??
After looking your work I feel ashamed to have considered myself a modeler time ago.
:o
-
I hate you Nuke :)
Since he as seen this pictures my youngest want to start building a model ... with me ...
How can I still be a hero in his eyes when he'll notice I'm a more than crappy modeller ? ;)
-
That is some damn fine work NUKE.
-
Hmm... i just realised that I have a couple of models i haven started yet and they have just been sitting in their box for 12-15 years.....maybe i should try one.
Any good site that shows you how to use spray stuff? I have never tried that and it looks tricky to get it right.
-
That's all well and good.
Now do it in 1/72 like me! :p
-
Wow! Keep the pics coming.. this is very cool.
-
And it's mine...all mine!!!!!
MUUUUHAHAHAHAAHHAHAHAHAHAHAAHAH!!!!!!!
Thanks for the updates Nuke, keep 'em coming.

Thanks again everyone.
I don't want to come off as some "glory hound" and I'm glad you guys don't mind the updates, so I'll update this a few more times until the final outcome, then I'm delivering it to DiabloTX's brother for transport back to Texas where she belongs :)
Hey Gofaster You're right, 1/72nd is way smaller. I used to make those but I found I like 1/48th the best.

Ummm, no.
For one thing that couldn't fit in either my parents RV or my room.
Second, the wife would have a fit if I pulled up to the house in that.
Third, I'd never be able to keep away all the AH 'tards that would become my "new bestest friend".
Plus, I'd get sick and tired of hearing Shane say, "Ole Kurt ain't got anything on Uncle Willy!" from across the street.
-
Man...it's only been 4 days since last update...withdrawals are creeping in...don't know how much longer I can last...NUKE, post a pic of a brush drying, trimmed flash on the desk, a rag with dried paint in it....anything...please....
*gulp*
-
lol Diablo, updates soon...still going well.
I been in bed sick since Sunday puking my guts out about every few hours until this very early this morning.
I might be able to post some pics tonight. I am working on the landing gear and wings now....adding brake lines using solder wire.
:)
-
LOL, ok Nuke, no worries man!
:aok
-
I have been working hard on the nuts and bolts of putty and sanding, which is taking a lot of time due to fit.....I have plenty of pics, but they are not worth posting yet. 1/24th scale is actually more difficult than I thought....everything is magnified and lots of things need to be corrected and finished.
I may just have to make a small website for anyone interested in updates.
For now, I will update when I have some "nice" ones to show.
Diablo, rest assured that it's going very well still...
-
Roger that, Nuke.
Charlie Mike.
Out.

see what happens when one defies the cods and favors kurt over uncle willy?!?
:D
keep up the good work nuke.
i've gotten a pony done, 1/48 cheapie to get back into things. a jug ready for the fiddly bits after painting the fuselage and a car and truck waiting for body paint. detailing engines are fun.
now to eventually get a camera.

lol! Man was I sick too..... I lost about 10 pounds in 2 days but lucky for me, I drank enough beer to make it back real quick.

Thanks Nuke, keep em coming!

Hey Diablo, I have lots of pics now...too many to post. I have since removed the motor and built pretty much the whole body and have sanded and filled in a lot of gaps....it's looking pretty much complete, minus paint, which is my favorite part.
The motor is back in, all the panels are in place, everything nice and straight ready for the paint, then the canopy and decals.
I'm in California right now, just settled into a hotel room. I'll shoot a couple more pics over here when I get home Sat. or Sun.
When I'm all done I want to send a CD of all the pics along with it
You know what I noticed ? The decals don't include swastika's. I guess because it's not PC in some places, so I will have to make them.
Take care.
-
That's cool Nuke, do what you have to do. IIRC that was/is a Heller kit which is French, don't think the swasti's are illegal to produce over there.
Which paint scheme did we decide on?
CHIT, I can't remember...was it Kommandeur IV/JG 3?
-
Yeah I think that was it, I have your emails with the pics from your squadi of the one you wanted . Before I paint I'll double check with you, make sure it's the one you wanted.

Don't toy with me. Post a gawdamn picture!

oh crap Sand, sorry.... I really thought you where being sarcastic, lol.
I am in Californina in a hotel on my notebook...I don't have access to my pics from here. I'll post some when I get home tomorrow or Sunday though....

Hehe... Can't wait.

Neato, cant wait to see a real FW flying. Wonder what the engine sounds like.

This is a common problem with all European and some American kits. If a manufacturer thinks that their kit will be sold in Germany, then they will omit the swastikas, even if the kit ends up being sold in USA, England, France, etc., anyplace other than Germany. That's why there aren't swastikas in the Revell, Airfix, and Heller kits, but there are in the Hasegawa kits (the older ones at least).
You know, you could've saved Nuke some filing and sanding time if you'd spent a little more money on a Tamiya or Hasegawa kit. :p
-
Gofaster, I had been sitting on that kit of over a decade. It was bought with the intention of ME building, not Nuke. I saw the P-51 he made last year and flipped out. I asked kindly about doing this kit for me and HE flipped out. 1/24 Fw-190? Sure.......
-
Dont forget to post pics of you running around the back yard with your FW burning up :D

Wow. Over 10 years? Actually, I think I have some kits that have been sitting around pretty close to that long. For a 10-year old kit, the detail is pretty good. I spotted some seams and sprue marks on the FW that needed to be smoothed, but the rest looks ok. One of these days I'm going to build that 1/25 Matchbox BF109E kit I scored on eBay cheap.
-
Update. As boring as these pics are, they do not begin to tell the amount of sanding and fixing gaps in this kit. But, it's going well..I fixed major flaws without ruining any detail. You can see the big gaps that need to be fixed still on the cowel. Its tough to fix these and keep the detail.
Next update may be more interesting.

Very nice!

Jeez Nuke, am I ever sorry that I sent you that POS kit if the first place. I should have sent my Hasegawa 1/32 FW-190 instead. Is this another classic example of "French Engineering"?
:D
Keep up the good work there Nuke, I know you wouldn't do it any other way.

custom decals I produced, and "future" floor finish for decal app. As I mentioned, the kit didn't have any damn swastika decals.
I coated the model with "future" floor polish for decal app..... this puppy is very close to completion.
Kyle, out of town for next week...almost done though.

That airframe was pulled out of the "warbird museum" because the owner was siphoning funds to support his own "habits" and not producing any progress...
I can tell you many wonderful storries about Tom Reilly and company... give me a few months....

actually they are not smooth... in these pics it looks as if there is no detail on the cowel ( and black painted areas) at all, but it's there.

EDIT
Nuke replied.
Looks great Nuke!

I do have pics though, just thought I wouldn't bore anyone with them.

Bore? Nah man... huh? Looks great so far... Post em!

The model looks great nuke :aok Since I live in Tucson mabye ill make a drive to see the final product and others in your colection.

Holy crap nuke. Your a stud. No kidding. The mottle on the fusalage sides is increadable.
Ive been building models since I was just a little nobler. You really lined your self up for a task taking on that old heller 190..
Have you seen the Trumpeter 109G yet?

Update?
I know, guilty of RADT.
So be it.

lol, I didn't want to jinx myself and was not going to post pics until it was 100% done.
But, the model is basically ready for decals now......so I'm gong to take it outside and get some new pics of it for you. I'll post them in within a couple hours.
I basically had to re-do the whole model after the engine didn't fit right and would not allow the prop to fit correctly. Well that bummed me out but actually the plane turned out better this time around anyway.
In case anyone is wonder what happened to all my pics... The company I used for 3 years as a web host changed their servers and took away my dedicated ip PLUS lost all of my files in the move. I have copies that I will re-post when I get time.
