Title: The United Nations...
Post by: Shuckins on April 03, 2004, 08:07:52 AM
...Is it a broken reed?

Has it failed to live up to its stated purpose?

Has it failed of its promise?

Would regional treaties and alliances be of more use to the United States?

Why should we stay in an organizaiton which allows third world tyrannies membership in its human rights organizations?

What benefits do we, and the world, derive from the continued membership of the United States in the United Nations?

What are your thoughts?

Regards, Shuckins/Leggern

Certainly a failed mandate in regards to Rwanda ( anyone catch the Frontline: Rwanda episode?)

The UN is a sum off all its parts so if it fails to deliver on its mandate where needed, what does that tell you about the scum of all its parts?

You heard right.   They are after a lot of things that are "mine" if you consider that I am a citizen of the U.S.   I mean... they ain't gonna take much from say... Spain right?

The U.N. is against private ownership of firearms.   This is logical since they do such a good job of protecting people and keeping the bad guys at bay that there is no need for people to defend themselves or overthrow their benevolent governments.

The US is the only reason Iraq even thought about complying with any UN resolution, beginning with the very first resolutions after Iraq invaded Kuwaiit.

After Iraq kicked the UN inspectors out of Iraq, what did the UN do? Did the UN write a scary resolution that made Saddam allow them back in?

The one and only thing the UN ever did was write resolutions that they refused to enforce.

So if you want the US out of the UN ( which I do as well) then you should be happy with the UN and it's important role as the world's premier resolution  publishing house.

Would have been nice to have the UN back before WWII, they could have written some resolutions stopped Hitler in his tracks.

Well.....

Using the same logic Bush supporters use when defending his version of the war on terror....

The UN has succeeded in eliminating world wars since its inception.

A question: Does the UN pay rent to the citizens of the US? If not, they should.

We need to remember that the primary and most important purpose of the UN was and is to prevent international war, period.  Domestic stuff is domestic stuff and the UN really has no place in it, under the current Charter.

That being said, I think the NATO invasion of Yugoslavia and the coallation invasion of Iraq is proof positive that the Charter as it is no longer viable.  It's no going to work if nations keep ignoring it.

"What benefits do we, and the world, derive from the continued membership of the United States in the United Nations?"

The world UN gets a the world's army from time to time when the US decides it wants to support a SC resolution calling for members to enforce it militarily.  Is this worth the cost of having the US ignore others and break the charter?  I'm not sure.  The UN also gets the US's significant dues, when the US decides to pay them.

The US gets a hell of alot out the UN.  The veto for one.  Which is great because that means the UN can never sanction the US no matter what it does.  And because the UN is primarily located in New York.  It makes it very easy for the US to spy on the members there.

A British citizen blew the whistle on the US and UK spying.
