Someone is PORT SCANNING me. Are they (hackers) after my computer or they are going after the network that i'm connected to?
* pls note that i have a cable internet connection.
-
At this point, I'd just start throwing up every firewall I could.
-
I have my firewall on. My Mc Afffe firewall just intecepted 10 SYN PORT SCAN ATTACKs!
Btw, WTF is a SYN PORT SCAN ATTACK???
-
im just checking to see if you have GAy or straight porn Ike....nothing to get so upset about :p
-
I'm serious, just tell me what's a SNY PORT SCAN ATTACK. I'm getting that message in my McAffe firewall program
-
if you get that message then your firewall is prolly blocking it just fine so you can just wait and it will stop soon.
-
hmmm i guess you have squirmed long enough.
Dont worry about it all thats doing is making you paranoid
You have a program "listening" on your port so anytime a scan is used wether legitamate or not your getting alerts.
Here's a simpler way of explaining it and if I'm wrong believe me skuzzy will pounce on me like a La7 on a slow stang
in startrek the Enterprise got "scanned" all the time that was cool they didnt get PO and raised shields till somebody targeted weapons. same thing here your firewall has detected a scan its just telling ya that your "port" has been scanned and your firewall has prolly automatically "blocked" anything else from that IP so dont freak till 5 klingons decloak arm weapons and tell ya to hand over all the chocolate:cool:
-
*sigh*
-
Theres really nothing to worry about port scans, it happens to all of us more or less.
Mostly the so called script kiddies are doing massive port scans on random IP's.
Pretty much only the systems in dangers are ones already infected through other ways or haven't been properly kept up to date.
-
Take off your tin foil hat Ike and go outside for some fresh air.
-
I still get SYN Port Scan from Attackers and also NEWTEARS from my McAfee Firewall, I really have a feeling about this and I don't like it.
-
Look at it this way .
Someone Is knocking at you door.
your firwall Is your door.
If you have your firewall set up right they most likely they wont get In unless you open the door( Open A port).
So All you are seeing is someone knocking at your door man Not to worry you firewall is simply doing its job.

OMG TEH PORT SCAN SI TEH WORST!!
CHECK OUT THIS COMPUTAR SIGHT (http://www.somethingawful.com/jeffk/dr-episode1/index.htm) IT WILL HELP YUO!

No reason to panic really. If it is indeed a hacker scanning for weaknesses the scan invariably is done on a whole range of IP's, where yours happened to fall within. If the attempted intrusion is blocked (i.e. firewall) the hackers tend to 'go' elsewhere because there are always some unprotected IP's found in such a port-scan. Just install a firewall, I prefer Norton because it allows you to monitor intrusions very well, but a free Zone Alarm will suffice as well.
Good luck!

Call the FBI, im sure they are interested in this.
-
Paranoia run amok. Could be as simple as a broadcast storm. Could be someone on your subnet turning thier computer off and on. How many of those ports are actually running listeners, besides your firewall?
Every personal firewall I have seen is designed to make you paranoid so they can sell you more product. Welcome to marketing 101.
Want to get really paranoid? How do you think those firewalls know about the port scans? They listen on the ports. Guess what that tells a potential hacker?

Eh eh eh, Skuzzy...
I have a vision of your evil grin while typing the above post.

Yo Mane! The whois lookup would mean very little.. Its very little trouble to make it appear you are posting from korea on this forum, let alone if you were a dweeb kid in the folks home scanning your cable network.. Or any other country for that matter.. Well, that is if they have any phone lines.. hehe
Was fun flying the other night.. Will try to track you down soon again! More to come 8)

Everyone should run a check at shieldsup (grc.com) to see how vulnerable they are. If you are running without a firewall like Zone alarm, you are asking for it in today's environment (WinXP has a built-in firewall, but wont block outgoing transmits or even alert you than they are going on, and last summer at least, proved vulnerable to certain exploits).
Even worse is running Windows with the default settings on as to protocols (better explained in the "Network Bondage" section of Shieldsup). Windows systems by default are designed to run in a friendly network, not in the internet. I got this computer with default W2KPro installed and within 8 hours online managed to get infected because I'd neglected to install a firewall or tighten the protocol settings.
If you suspect you have a virus, free scans are offered at the McAfee and Norton/Symantec sites -Stinger covers only the most prominent viruses. Some people say Housecall just adds in spyware problems as much as it could take away in virus problems.
-
it (port scanning) happens ALL THE TIME...
you're probably just aware of it now is the difference.
Sounds like your firewall is doing it's job.
This is the problem with firewalls and the like.
They report hitherto unknown things, like port-scanning,
that alarm the unknowing.
A little education goes a long ways.
Look at the list of processes/applications that are blocked. A real eye opener.

you missed the humor i guess :)

LOL
No evil grin Naso.
It is just amazing what marketing has wrought.
Rasker, I have never used a personal firewall and never will. I won't get hacked either.
It is all due to it being easier to tell someone they need a firewall than actually trying to explain how to correctly setup a network.
Another popular way to get probed (besides going to a doctor), is to inherit an IP address from someone that was recently running a peer-to-peer file sharing program. That will gaurantee a flood of hits.
Or inherit an IP address from someone that was using thier computer as an FTP server.
Or inherit an IP address from someone that was running an email server, or DNS server.....
Or someone on your network subnet simply turning on their computer will hit yours as well and it will do it again when they turn it off.
I could do this all day long. The point is, your computer gets hit all the time. Turn off your firewall reporting/logging if you do not understand why it happens.

Whats that music on the links pagE?
oh and um that girl is butt ugly...
-
I haven't installed any outside source firewalls on my system and according to Shieldsup my computer scores perfectly and is extremely secure. All my ports are stealth and as far as shieldsup can tell my computer doesn't exist on the internet. Does this make any sense?
-
sigh... again
-
back when I had dial-up I was running the 'black-ice' firewall. one week, just for kicks, I set it to keep a log of every portscan.
I averaged over 125 'attacks' per day.
