Title: Arthritic?
Post by: Sandman on April 05, 2004, 11:59:34 PM
Aging is such a drag. Finally had to get rid of the mouse (http://www.microsoft.com/hardware/mouseandkeyboard/productdetails.aspx?pid=008) and switch to a ball (http://www.logitech.com/index.cfm/products/details/US/EN,CRID=6,CONTENTID=5003).

It's not carpal tunnel... it's the top of my hand... hurts like hell using a mouse lately.

:)

I used to like trackballs long ago and then went to mice and got comfortable with them. Been using a ball all night tonight and unlike the past few evenings, no pain at all.

You play many first person shooters/  doesn't soeem like those would work too well with a trackmabll.

Not typically. Occasionally, I'll play Unreal Tournament against my kids, so I kept the mouse around for that.

I could easily be mistaken but it seems to me like all the newfangled devices marketed for use with FPS seem to have trackballs on 'em. Maybe they're junk though.

I could imagine, however, that once ya get used to a trackball it could likely be so much better than a mouse.

Let us know how it goes once ya get used to it.

Well... it's been a week. Hand still hurts, but it's a bit more bearable now that I switched to a ball instead of the mouse.

Can ya whip the pointer around much the same as with using a mouse? Or still weird to use?

sandman - that trackball is the wrong one to get.

Get one that uses your thumb.

I use a mouse all day at work on a CAD machine and my hand gets somewhat stiff by the end of the day.  At home I use a Logitech Cordless TrackMan Wheel Mouse (http://www.compusa.com/products/product_info.asp?product_code=50108323) and its TERRIFIC for comfortable computing.  Its a much more natural position for your hand than that damn marble mouse (which I have used also - and it strained the tendons on the back of my hand).

If you insist on using your fingers, one that better fits your natural hand position would be better - like this one (http://www.compusa.com/products/product_info.asp?product_code=50206105).

They do suck for FPS games, because if you spin the ball too fast, the system just ignores it 'cause it can't read the dots.  But for every day computing, it works great.  I just cross my arms and nestle the trackman in the crook of one arm and use it with the other.  Extremely comfortable.

Whatever you use, make sure your elbow is supported when operating either a mouse or trackball.  Don't push on the wrist or "bridge" your arm between your wrist and shoulder.  THAT is what kills your wrist.

Every bit as fast. Works fine. In fact, I'm not moving my arm so this is even less effort. :)

I tried one of those for about an hour... That thing hurt almost as much as a mouse. Thing is, it's not my wrist that hurts. It's the top of my hand... behindand around my knuckles.

Used to take glucosamine, but didn't realize any benefit from it. I may have to give it more time. As for pain killers, I try to avoid them.

I got an idea at the hospital awhile back when they were taking my oxygen saturation level. I was thinking, with the way the optical mouse is set up, why not put that optical on your index fingertip? The left click would be on your thumb, and the right click on your middle finger. The left and right click would be set up just a little more sensitive. Picture your hand resting open on your quadricep(lap), you just move your hand around and lightly press on your thumb or middle finger to left or right click, and you could place your hand anywhere comfortable.(and no perverted replies:lol )

I switched to using my mouse left handed last month, carpal tunnel I think. It has gotten better since I switched.

Sandy I sympathise with ya.  I couple of years ago I felt my first "ache" from age.  That's when I knew that I couldn't do as much as I used to.  The job that I work at now when I come home my legs are tingling from all the walking/lifting that I do.  I remember as a kid in my early 20's I could do stuff ALL day and not feel a thing.  Now, it's a lot different.

Yeah, like wine we get better with age but there's a lot of whine with that wine.
