Title: Skin "age" issues
Post by: REVGST on April 06, 2004, 10:18:21 AM
Recently, I was searching the internet for warbird skins to make for a P-51. Upon finding this page.. P-51 Registry (http://www.warbirdsresourcegroup.org/registry/p51registry/p51registry.html)
However, the dates on 99% of the planes are from 1950 and on. I know HT wants WWII skins, but I do not think there are many of them left out there. If you visit the lnk, I really like "Bald Eagle" "Damn Yankee" and "Lou IV" but these might not be accepted by HT if skinned. HiTech, you should allow other skins to be accepted if they are authentic from the end of WWII on. What is everyone elses feelings on this idea?

I would guess that if skins were accepted from the end of wwII on - then a skin from 1998's reno air races would be correct then also? I would imagine HTC wouldn't accept a skin from after the war.

There are tons of pictures / profiles of p51s that would be fun to skin of the p51. The only p51s werent just the Big beautiful Dolls and  Checkertails....

Also try books instead of just the internet......

if there's a 1/2 price book store near you - great deals on older books with tons of info, color pics.

Squadron Publications make very good books for research.

And You can even check out aeromaster decals....they've done the research on the plane - and give you the color scheme and ref. pics usually.

Good luck skinning and have fun

The page you are looking at shows restored Mustangs.

The Mustangs you named are WW2 paint schemes for the most part.

Lou IV was a very early P51D without the fin fillet on the vertical tail.

Bald Eagle was actually a P51B.  There is a D model restored in those markings.

Damn Yankee is some warbird owners made up name.

CC thanks for the info. I didnt mean a reno race skin, lol. I was hoping if it was historically correct in a war scheme that it might have the possibility of being accepted, thats all.
