Maybe I should buy some riot gear and get ready.
If this lady (http://www.tampatrib.com/MGA9NVAHPSD.html) doesn't get convicted for vehicular manslaughter, then there's going to be a riot like this city has never seen.
No good can come from this case, whether she's found guilty or not. Two kids are dead, two more are/were in the hospital (one was released today with a steel rod in her leg), and the community will lose a well-liked teacher.
When I first heard that one of the suspects had hired Barry Cohen (a prominent criminal defense attorney who charges big money) but the suspect hadn't been identified, I figured it was a white family living in one of the big-ticket planned communities up in North Tampa. The victims were black children who live in "Suitcase City", an underdeveloped area of town known for a transient population and poverty.
The kicker is, not only did she flee the scene, she tried to cover it up by washing and hiding her car.

We never have any good riots here in Dixon.

Nice to see you are ready to hang her already...
Let the courts deal with it. If there are rioters, hang them.
-
I know a guy who had to flee the seen in East Palo Alto.
He was driving down a side street when a teen on a bike poped out, and he hit the bike and stoped. The kid was not hurt but the bike was, and he was trying to give the kid his insurance info, when a mob of very angry black guys showed up (Black kid). They started to threaten to kill him and he and his two passangers got back in the car and took off.
Nothing was ever reported to the Police from either side.

Just send in the National Guard:aok

Ever notice how riots usually occur in locations where the local law enforcement isnt very accepting of armed citizens?

Did someone win a championship?

The devil rays have a winning percentage that is higher then it will ever be.

Two accidents and two speeding tickets since 2000, she was a reckless driver. That doesn't mean she was at fault in the accident but I'm betting she was negligent based on her record. No excuse for not stopping to render aid. I think she'll be spending some time in the "big house".

As she should!
-
did you see her lawyer?
she is guilty but will not be charged as much as the "neighborhood" thinks she needs to be no matter what her punishment is...
AKIron, do you know the area, it is 99.9% black and a cracktown, one of the highest crime rate areas in tampa, what do you think would have happened if she stopped? One more death?
not stopping is one thing (I agree with that = I would not have stopped), trying to cover it up is wrong.
But Cohen will show that it is dimly lit, the kids were unsupervised, without an adult, crossing the street not at a crosswalk - and I'd bet he pulls their mother into it, what was she doing, where was she at...its gonna be ugly, hopefully the media will not fan the flames.
-
That particular street is dark. And I do mean pitch-black dark. Its under-developed, with no curbs, no sidewalks, and very few streetlights (some of which are partially blocked by 100-year old oak trees). I've driven down it a couple of times on my way to the University Area Community Park gymnasium for volleyball. I can't blame her for hitting the kids, but I do blame her for not stopping long enough to check on them, and I do blame her for trying to cover up her crime.
On the other hand, at least she came forward (probably when she realized the heat was closing in on her) and tried to apologize to the family. Two other vehicles are still being sought.
She can pretty much kiss her teaching job good-bye. She might even lose her dance studio if enrollment drops as a result of the eventual trial.

And the Lightning are in the play-offs. Of course, in NHL hockey just about every team goes into the play-offs.

I have been there before, stopping in that area is not a choice. Turning yourself in at the police station was a choice after leaving the scene. Barry will get her a lighter sentence but not freedom...

sour said...."Ever notice how riots usually occur in locations where the local law enforcement isnt very accepting of armed citizens?"
well.... oddly enough I did. They allways happen in these pockets of liberal paradise that are "progressive" and remove the right(or put up huge obstacles) of citizens.
There are pockets of lawless barbarians like the Koreans who defended their stores with firearms and deprived the rightious "protestors" of their gawd given right to burn down their stores.
Even with all the examples.... some are still blind and feel that the constitution is outdated because man has evolved past violence.

I can tell you right now, I wouldn't be surprised if 80% of the homes in that area had more than 1 firearm in them.
-
gofaster... the homes won't be looted/burned. it will be the downtown areas where there is nothing to protect your property but the...... government.

Silly comparison. Riots occurr in urban areas. The correlation is to the number of people, not their access to firearms. If a riot happens in rural South Dakota it's called a fistfight.
-
Won't be downtown either. That part of town has strip malls and black neighborhoods. If there's looting, it'll be the local Target and Wal-Mart, discount clothing stores, tire shops, self-storage warehouses, and her dance studio.
That's assuming, of course, the rioters don't drive the 5 miles up the road to hit the white neighborhoods and golf-course homes.
-
they wouldn't get far - this isn't miami or LA, too many good ole boys
US41 to 30th st
Fletcher to Skipper Rd - throw in the todd for good measure
best thing that could happen to that area is for it to be burned down
don't know what happened, in 77 when I was "studying" at USF it was nothing but college kids in cheap apts/food joints
moved back in 83 and had to kick in my SA whenever had to run calls after dark up there..heck the zombies didnt make it outside until after dark, guess they were just waking up from the crackrock nite b4

Yeah, the only store in that area worth a hoot is Z-doc's Nissan 240/260/280/300ZX repair depot. And maybe the McDonald's.

I hardly call 16 of 30 teams the entire league... learn the sport before you critisize it.
-
well... it still doesn't seem fair..... the government should use tax money to subsidize riots in rural areas..
We allways get left out of the fun.

those kids might have been playing a game of "Dodge the Car".
That would be my preferred defense in similar situation.
OH MY COD!

Eagler said "this isn't miami or L.A." In 1980 black "business man" Arthur McDuffie was shot and killed by Miami Police attempting to flee arrest.
the Policemen involved in the shooting 4 white 1 black were all found innocent by a mixed race jury.
the verdict touched off three days of rioting, looting and burning (in the black community). That area (liberty city, model city & brownsville) has never rebounded. many national companies that provided jobs in the area never returned after the fires.
when a group of thugs attempted to cross the railroad tracks over to where we lived and continue the festivities they were persuaded to turn around and burn eastward by concerned neigbors. from as far south as okeechobee road (US 27) to NW 135th street roughly along the "border" were citizens of all races, hanging out at the corners armed, trading stories and watching.
no homes or businesses were damaged west of NW 27th Avenue a clear ten blocks away from the line dividing where on the east side you have a predominantly underpriviledged black neighborhood divided by a warehouse and industrial district from a mixed white/hispanic/black lower middle class neighborhood where i grew up and lived in at the time.
as a side note many decent black folk in the afflicted areas took white citizens that were caught in the initial rush and physically kept them from being killed by the thugs. I can't recall the number of innocents that were dragged from their vehicles and brutally murdered that day. their only crime was they were not black. the elderly grandparents of a friend were beaten beyond recognition and dragged through the streets in a scene reminiscent of "blackhawk down".
good ol' boys ain't the only ones that will step up to the plate come defense time eagler.

The pot is starting to boil (http://www.tampatrib.com/MGARN4VBMTD.html).

Wilkins has rejected assertions that the case against Porter has been influenced by racial issues - Porter is white, and Wilkins' family is black.
Her message was lost on Linda Edwards, a Tampa woman who drove to the Orient Road Jail on Wednesday morning after seeing TV reports that Porter was jailed.
When Porter was released, Edwards ran up to her and began yelling. Porter kept her head down and eyes averted. She did not respond.
``I came down here to get some answers, and I wanted her to know that I am one black woman who is very angry, and there are thousands of others just like me,'' Edwards said.
Inmates also yelled at Porter as she went through the booking process, said Latrease Milton, 24, of Tampa, who bailed out of jail on a marijuana possession charge about the same time Porter was in the booking area.
``It's about time you showed up here,'' Milton quoted the other inmates saying.

"latresse"? LOL..
dam it! we never have any good riots here. Riot zombies are pretty good.. they move quickly and in packs but are easily scattered..... bad side is that they can use primitive tools like clubs and have discovered fire.. they are also very noisy...
plus side is that you don't have to hit em in the head to disable em. Any good torso shot will disable em and scatter those around the stricken zombie.
Oh well... maybe if we get a basketball team.
