Title: A peace to end all peace
Post by: Lance on April 07, 2004, 03:11:27 PM
Just finished this (http://www.amazon.com/exec/obidos/ASIN/0805068848/qid=1081368390/sr=2-1/ref=sr_2_1/102-7239068-5597716) book.  It is excellent and very prescient.  There are a lot of parallels between what the British empire tried to accomplish in the middle east after WWI and what we are trying to accomplish now in Afganistan and Iraq.  Lets hope we can do a better job of it.

Anyway, I highly recommend the book.  Anyone else read it?

I read this book last summer, a very interesting read.

I knew about the Russo-Turk-German-Brit angle of the story but war surprised to learn of the French involement in Lebanon and Syria.

As a side note I loaned it to my nephew who is SF.  He brought it back from Afganistan with a AK round thru it, it was in his ruck.  Bit of irony there was discussed over some Jamisons.

Thanks, it seems to be fairly unbiased and detailed. I'm going to pick it up.  I would recommend in return:

I dont believe there will ever be peace in that region or Iraq so long as people like Shiite imam Muqtada al-Sadr (who I think is a moron) exist and can stir up the anger of the public who might be willing to pick up arms and fight a war that should have been fought in the dessert. Now they have chosen to fall in the streets in front of their families. Each a martar. The only way peace can be attained is to teach the young people another way. I can only imagine if they decided to fight after major coalition forces decided to pick up and leave Iraq in the hands of the new gov.

Iran was making headway in the fifties, democratic elections and all but it just wasn't democratic enough for some.

Btw those reviews are great to read.

Its very easy to rear a fanatical little martyr.  Beat him when he's young and force him to memorize the Koran by age 6 (This is common, research it). Keep them uneducated except in the area of who the enemy is, Allah is great, and weapons training. By age 10 you have a fanatical fundamentalist willing to die for his family, meanwhile people like Hristo see him as a freedom fighter due to higher intellect brainwashing called European Television.

I do believe that Rip is right on the mark with this comment.

IMHO, it's core to the whole problem which will never be solved until the west somehow comes to grip with this systemic value set.
